Sad to say, most animal shelters are not no-kill shelters because of lack of funding and overcrowding.
My advice? Put a short ad in your local paper (usually under 3 lines is free for a week) about a free dog.

Almost all of you are missinformed. You are answering questions depending on your area that do not apply to Belton, Texas. There is a new animal shelter in Belton called Bell Area Animal Shelter and you can check them out at www.bellareaanimalshelter.com. They are a no kill shelter except in extreme cases (deathly ill animals, rabid animals, or aggressive animals). They do not pay attention to how long it takes to get that special animal a home. BUT you are the one that took this dog into your house and that is your responsibility to find him a new home! Put an ad in the local paper (Belton Journal), the Thrifty Nickel, and maybe the Temple Telegram. I have had great success with finding rescued animals great homes in all three (especially the Thrifty Nickel). Oh by the way, animal shelters all over bell county are full of pit bulls and so are the rescues.

There will probably be a waiting list they might not be able to take him in straight away. This really is a big problem that happens SO often, people just do not realise what they are taking on when purchasing a tiny little puppy. There are campaigns telling people that a dog is for life not just for Christmas, yet year after year people go and get pups and for one reason or another want rid.
I am sure that you feel that you are responsible, but you say that you cannot manage your dog. How do you think someone else is going to manage him? He is a pit bull X and he will be strong. he sounds like he needs to go to training classes as you cant manage him. Please try that first as no one with a child will want an unmanageable pit bull. You may have to have him destroyed.

I think admitting that you can't take care of your dog proves that you are a responsible pet owner. If I was nearby I'd take him for you. I am a Municipal worker in Canada and I can tell you that the City pound puts down 40% of the animals that it brings in. If you are willing to help him find a good home, that would be ideal, but could take some time. I know that you are 4 hours away from Houston, but if you were willing, they have a really great Humane Society there. Check it out.
Good Luck to you and your dog!

I would put an ad in the paper. The if you have to take him to the shelter turn him in as a owner died and need a home. Speak of his positive qualities and so forth. If they can't find him a home you can get him back and try the paper again. The one other person said try a pit bull safe place. If he is to much is he chewing or biting something in your house. Please let people know his age and his habits even if they seem wrong to you .They might be able to correct the habits with love and teachings.

I wouldnt suggest a newspaper ad or dropping him off at the pound. search for a local pitt bull resque on the internet in your area. just go to a search engine and type in "pitt bull resque in texas" the dog will go to a real home and not some cold, lonely cage in the pound. (even if he isnt full blooded) they will keep him in a real home until someone adopts him. This is the only way to know he will go to a place where he is going to be loved and have a chance to be around other dogs.

There are "no kill shelters" for dogs and cats. The problem with giving him away in the classifieds is, you never know how he will be treated. The shelters at least make people fill out applications.

Why don't you just train him? If you spent a little 'quality time' training then you don't need to feel bad about not giving him attention night and day.
He is a PB mix and it is likely he will be put down. Even no kill shelters just ship the unadoptables to a kill shelter.

Yes the shelters will take him in but if no one takes him out, they'll put him down. But, if you give ads in the paper, you will be able 2 find a good home for him and u will always be sure that he is happy. Even though it takes a bit of money, you won't have the nagging feeling that "if my dog's dead, its because of me"............

Try and contact a Pit Bull rescue group. DO NOT give him away in the classifieds or Craigslist. He will most assuredly go to someone who fights dogs.
Maybe try going to obedience classes with him before you give up. Go on walks and go to a dog park if there's one nearby.
