I brought a new Jack Russell puppy home last night, two months after the loss of our previous dog of the same breed. Although my two cats tolerated the last dog well, they seem very scared of this one and are staying outside the house. They are very curious but are hissing at it, and the puppy is doing little barks at them! Will they ever get used to each other?

Eventually, give it time. Just don't ever force the relationship.

Know-body knows cats and dogs never really do get on and the cats are seemingly jealous resulting in this behaviour, the puppy is responding to the hisses by barking to warn them off, the best advice i can give is to keep them around each other until they get used to one another. i would also like to say i had the same problem not so long ago only the puppy is a very large puppy but i just left them to it and now they are fine with each other

I introduced a new puppy into my home where there were two adult cats. One cat pretended the puppy wasn't there and got round having to deal with it that way! The other one got himself cornered, bashed the puppy on the nose, puppy screamed and ran to me and never bothered either of the cats again. In time they all ended up sleeping in a heap on the floor cushion or in front of the fire. Don't worry, it'll happen. Though do remember that until puppies are about 12 weeks old they don't really retain anything in the porridge sloshing around between their ears and so if yours is younger, expect the hissing and bashing to go on a bit longer!

It'll take time. We rescued two abandoned puppies in late January and my cats (we have 4) have adjusted fairly well, I think, although it's not perfect. Two of the cats are perfectly fine with the dogs, one of the cats totally despises them, and my other cat is okay with the dogs as long as they don't bother her. My cats had never been exposed to dogs before so the fact that they're doing this well at all is really good, I think.

You have described typical cat reaction to a newcomer.
Cats often sulk and refuse to come home when something new comes into their terrority.
Just be calm, don't rush it and make sure your puppy doesn't rush the cats, keep him on your lap or close by in control whenever the cats are about and praise him for being calm.
Be careful though as if the cats smack him they could catch his eye!
If you take your time it will all work out

yeah, they will get use to each other. When animals first encounter each other for the first time they look at it as being a threat. But when they see that it's not, they will get use to each other. Just let them get use to each other at their own speed. The cats will have to show the puppy who's boss. He will leave them alone after that. lol. Mine went through that whole thing. Now they ignore each other...

They will learn to tolerate it. They will learn to avoid it, when its in a playful mood. Don't ever expect them to love it/want to play with it. You may have to settle for an uneasy truce, as we've had to on several similar occasions. Kittens that grow up with dogs are fine, but older cats that have dogs introduced generally (not always) don't ever become friends

I'm looking at my dog, who the previous owner trained to kill cats, sleeping on my couch with six cats. If she can learn to love cats instead of killing them, I'm sure your kitties will
