You burn more calories ,with the amount of acceleration. The harder it is to do,the least time and distance. You can burn calories at the same rate and time ,with more acceleration.Add distance, then more calories are burnt. Factor in speed the degree of difficulty, and exertion.

go to guy is right, within the first 15-20 minutes of exercising you don't burn fat at all.
but also after that time is of essence, because when you want to lose weight, you have to consider how many times your heart beats in a certain TIME frame to make your body burn calories from fat instead of protein or carbs (usually a heart rate of 120 to 140 is good) AND the LONGER you exercise the more calories you burn and the more your body knows: "this is not just a short walk, i need to take energy from the stored fat to make it till the end."
so if you are not a marathon runner, WALK FAST instead of jogging and do that for as long and as often as you can (two, three, four hours...).

i run alot i think distance personally but it depends on your body type. if you run 3 miles in 20 mins of course your going to burn more calories. but if you give your self time say about 45 mins to run 3 miles then your conditioning yourself and you will eventually run longer and faster not to mention build up your metabolism. just run at your own pace and you will build up to a faster pace and not wear yourself out. think long term.

Time. Period. In the first fifteen minutes, your body is just burning the carbs you've eaten. After that, it begins to peck away at the water in your muscles. When it brakes that bond, it finally begins to chew on your fat.

If I am not wrong, it is distance and consistency.
You need to exercise at least 4-5 times a week for at least 30 minutes.
if you are dieting, you need to do more.
Remember to do warm-ups before exercising. :-)

it's time and how hard you are working. the harder you work the more calories you will burn for each increment of time.
