I think that the Bible has morals in it that are timeless. Some of the practices however aren't. Even if we tried to adhere to every punishment and custom in the Bible I don't think we would even know where to start. The Bible is open to so many interpretations that no one could ever agree to the laws that we would abide out of it. Well unless we elected some religious official to decide for us like the pope. But that's a whole other topic. I think your right as long as we read the Bible and take what is says with a grain of salt we should be alright. Don't get tied up in the words try to look for the meaning.
Mark 4:12 :: Contemporary English Version (CEV)
12The reason is,
"These people will look
and look, but never see.
They will listen and listen,
but never understand.
If they did,
they would turn to God,
and he would forgive them."

There's a different angle to this question. You accept Jesus as your personal Savior and Lord. He gives you the Holy Spirit as your guide. The Holy Spirit will tell you what are the things that you have to take literally; things like love your neighbor as yourself. There are so many things that are prophesied for the future and some about the past that are not to be taken literally. The Holy Spirit will give the correct guidance.

As a general rule, the Old Testament is a load of crap that some prophets wrote. It was accepted, perhaps as truth, to be the religion.
New Testament stories were likely written by the prophets who were hiding from the Romans in caves somewhere. They were probably on drugs, too, by the way. Nevertheless, the NT isn't so much stories as impression. The message and meaning is what's worth remembering- love your neighbour and all that.

Not at all. The Bible is dealing with events that have strong spiritual background. It is difficult to explain those experiences with words.
Jesus knew that he will be 'executed'. If he wanted that somebody write about him ant his experiences he would ordered it and the documents would be created sun after his departure. Or even he himself would write a book or something in this regard.
But the history is full of lies.

no, the bible is a metaphor. it uses examples to illustrate the "story". and if we did as you surmise we do, (ie live by the book and its lessons) life, and the world would be a utopian society. however, men, decided they knew better than God, and they used their interpretations of teh books. and we have war and chaos.
nowhere does it say thou shalt go forth from this place, into a meeting places of many, (and detonate the C4 or Semtex you have wrapped around yourself) all men are equal, it is only their position which affords them power.
all the basic laws in the bible are already covered by common law, the bible says thou shalt not steal...the police have divided it up into dozens of splinter offences... thou shalt not kill, commit adultery, bear false witness etc...oh and then theres idolatory. we worship at the feet of mammon.

The Bible is unfit to be used as a moral guide, it is out of date , it is confused and contradictory and open to almost any interpretation anyone wants to place upon it...No two Christians can agree on anything in there.

Hi!
This is what makes our God interesting...He puts things in the bible that should actually push many people away from Christianity but SOMEHOW MANY COME TO GIVE THEMSELVES TO JESUS CHRIST....
I mean, the fact that the God of Jesus Christ allowed Him to be killed so painfully should actually push people away from Christianity but somehow many surrender their lives to Christ...THERE MUST BE SOMETHING ABOUT THIS GOD!
People of this generation hate human torture and slavery but many still come to Jesus Christ even after they discover these things in the bible....
The answer:
God can use a foolish thing to win many who love the truth and righteousness to Him.... at the same time use that foolish thing to push away those who love sin and unrighteousness and are too proud!
Hope this clears things!

It is my personaly belief that the bible is mixed of literal and paroble. Christ himself said he taught to the masses in paraoble so that they would understand. Do you think it should be taken literally then? As man develops and changes things that applied thousands of years ago get subject to interpretatin which cause perversion of religion. I suggest visitng Baha'i.org.

Three aspects to this that I can assist you with:
a) Characters depicted in the book have representation of life on earth and hence has all good and bad as happens in real-life presented there as course of life. Bible doesn't say that everything that happened in bible stories should be taken as principles. Bible clearly defines the principles/guidelines which need to be separated from story itself. People shown in Bible are from real world and hence they need to suffer, they need to have mix of good and bad happening to them.
b) It is important to understand the separation of story from the principles. Bible like many other ancient scripture across the globe has been written in form of a symbolic story so that common mass can connect to it in easy manner without having to take hardship of spritual advancement to adopt to "right way of living".
c) What makes it difficult in scriptures like Bible is that stories and principles are defined with intention that people should just follow it. It define "what" and "how" for way of human life but it doesn't elaborate "why" part which essentially discloses the ultimate truth and hence many times we are misguided to just follow the stories and not the principles behind it.
One of my favorite example is finger and moon. Bible stories are like finger pointing to moon, moon representing God. Now a right way of it is to follow the direction of finger to get your sight and vision to God but more often than not, people focus on finger itself and never actually get out sight and vision to moon ever..:-)..
Does it help?
