I don't think so. In fact, I know there is a large number of military that really get annoyed by movies like that, because it feeds into the idea that the average military member is some dumb redneck who is being led by some twisted sadist who gets off on hurting people.

While there are people like that in the military, there are also people like that in the civilian world, too.

Most people in the military are very normal people who have families, who coach little league, who like to hang out with their buddies to watch the game on the weekends. They join the PTA, they serve as Scout Leaders, and, when the civilian elected officials deem it necessary, they risk their lives in a hellish environment, because that is what they have sworn to do -

To serve their country (and their countrymen) by defending the constitution and obeying the orders of those appointed over them.

All too often, these movies focus on the killing and are actually giving a very warped view of the military as a whole and the people who serve in it in general.

Now, that is not to say that they aren't entertaining, but then again, so is Star Wars, and I'm not expecting to see someone walk down my street in a brown robe carrying a light saber any time soon, either. So, just like Star Wars, people need to realize these movies are not the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth - as they are so often assumed to be.

Most military people fit this song lyric to a T - "as they man the battle stations, praying war will never come..." Now that we have war, they want to do their jobs to the best of their ability, come home safe, bring their buddies home safely, and get what they have to do done.

Well, according to the book version of Jarhead Marines enjoy ostensibly anti-war like Platoon and Full Metal Jacket as "war porn". The author notes the irony of Hollywood liberal's supposed anit-war message movies being used to get pumped up for combat.

Come on!!!! Do you think some Hollywood producers sit around a desk and wonder: "Let's make a war movie that romanticize the idea of war"?

When I see these movies, I see them as entertainment. Nothing more. Nothing less.

From the question it seems that you feel that military life, war are shown in a positive light, yes?
I didn't think it was in a positive ight.
But regardless, wars are still a part of human life.
After WWI and after WWII Europeans were saying that that was their last one, and they are always back there in the tranches. We, as a race, have not yet evolved out of war stage...

The military offers free consultation to movie producers, including providing access to bases, use of equipment and vehicles in exchange for presenting them in a way that would encourage enlistment and improve public opinion.

So while scripts are not necessarily written for that purpose, they do keep in mind that if they want the military to help them with their film that it needs to show them in a certain light.

Except Full Metal Jacket, they could make it palatable, I think.
