"For your information, the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) did indeed marry the extremely intellectual later-to-become scholar Aisha when she was nine, that's what the general consensus is. But they "did not" (big emphasis there) consumate the marriage until she was probably around 15 according to records and historical facts.." --Jana

Most Muslims don't know the Qu'ran in detail to know facts such as this. How, you might ask? Because Islam has kids recite Qu'ran from an early age in Arabic, so for the billions of non-Arabic speaking Muslims, they are learning to say suras (verses) in a language they cannot speak. Compared to Christians, very few Muslims read and "study" their holy book. This is basically because Islam is suspicious of "innovation" and so discourages individual thought, rather Muslims tend to follow the several established schools of thought, such as Hanafi, etc. for guidance on Qu'ran, so your average Muslim on the street may not even realize how old Aisha was at her marriage to Muhammad. For those who DO realize, one of the reasons they tend to de-emphasize the fact, is that the idea of a 52 year old man having sex with a 9 year old girl is repugnant. Those who know this fact but are interested in gaining converts to Islam instead tend to focus on the following facts (1) the similarities between Christianity and Islam, including the same characters - Abraham, Moses, Jesus, and the Virgin Mary, (2) the strong community and family values and "respect" for women as human beings rather than "objects", and (3) the supposed unchanged nature of Islam vs. Christianity. These facts often appeal to disgruntled Christians, whereas again, the idea of sex with a child would not. If questioned about this fact, a Muslim is likely to tell you that (1) Aisha WANTED to marry Muhammad (as if she had adult judgement at age 9), (2) Muhammad had great respect for women and before he brought Islam, girl children were routinely killed at birth, (3) during the time of Aisha's life, girls were routinely married at this young age. So take your pick, many Muslims really do not realize this, BUT if enlightened to the issue, tend to use one of these three excuses about the fact. Either way, the Qu'ran clearly states Aisha's age at marriage and consummation of the marriage and she was indeed 9.

There is no specific age written down, scholars have to interpret it from all the evidence and writings available.
He was the true prophet by the way.

Mr Mister, you are so full of B.S that I would laugh if it was a little less offensive. You have swallowed so much false propaganda and read so many western intrepretations of the history of islam, you really can't see the truth. Put your money where your mouth is, go and spend some time in a muslim community, and you will quickly see your mistakes, and probably be very embarrassed by them.

Sensitive, you are reported. This is a forum for discussion, not obscenities.

Renoz, bravo and well done for speaking the simple truth of the situation

Everyone: Let me clarify that most stories about Prophet Muhammad's life is not from the Quran. They come from Hadith, which are... you can all them journals, based on his comrades' daily interactions with him. It is therefore not true to say that Muslims do not learn the Quran in detail therefore do not know the Prophet's life.

It is true that Aisya was betrothed to Muhammad when she was only 6 but the marriage was consummated when she was 9. Ladies and gentlemen, in hot countries, girls generally reached their puberty faster. In Asia itself, it is a norm for girls to be married off (yes by their parents) once they reach puberty as young as 9 years old. Some of my grand aunts are married at age 9. No, it is not barbaric, no it is not child molestation as they are legally married both by law and in Islam. Most of them are still in a loving marriage till today. Call it whatever you want. At least we don't contribute to the AIDS statistics this way.

I was surfing the other day and I stumbled upon the site below. Probably something for you to read to gain a better perspective on things. It also stated that Mary was about 13 when she gave birth to Jesus.

'Aishah, may God be pleased with her, narrated that the Prophet was betrothed (zawaj) to her when she was six years old and he consummated (nikah) his marriage when she was nine years old, and then she remained with him for nine years. (Saheeh al-Bukhari, Volume 7, Book 62, Number 64)
Of the four ahadith in Saheeh al-Bukhari, two were narrated from 'Aishah (7:64 and 7:65), one from Abu Hishaam (5:236) and one via 'Ursa (7:88). All three of the ahadith in Saheeh Muslim have 'Aishah as a narrator. Additionally, all of the ahadith in both books agree that the marriage betrothal contract took place when 'Aishah was "six years old", but was not consummated until she was "nine years old". Additionally, a hadeeth with basically the same text (matn) is reported in Sunan Abu Dawood. Needless to say, this evidence is-Islamically speaking-overwhelmingly strong and Muslims who deny it do so only by sacrificing their intellectual honesty, pure faith or both.
This evidence having been established, there doesn't seem much room for debate about 'Aishah's age amongst believing Muslims. Until someone proves that in the Arabic language "nine years old" means something other than "nine years old", then we should all be firm in our belief that she was "nine years old" (as if there's a reason or need to believe otherwise!?!). In spite of these facts, there are still some Muslim authors that have somehow (?) managed to push 'Aishah's age out to as far as "fourteen or fifteen years old" at the time of her marriage to the Prophet . It should come as no surprise, however, that none of them ever offer any proof, evidence or references for their opinions. This can be said with the utmost confidence, since certainly none of them can produce sources more authentic than the hadeeth collections of Imams al-Bukhari and Muslim! Based on the research that I've done, I feel that there is a common source for those who claim that 'Aishah's age was "fourteen or fifteen years old" at the time of the marriage. This source is "The Biographies of Prominent Muslims" which is published in book form, on CD-ROM and is posted in several places on the Internet. Just another example of why going to the sources is important . . .

AIDS which countries are getting the top positions???? the non muslim countries, for ur information. in ur society or most vastly in non-muslims society girls and boys talk about their sex experiences openly. they will tell u, oh i have been wid 5 boys or 10 girls and all of them were god sexy.....etc etc......is this what u learn from your religion???????? sex between bf and gf is not what islam tells us. we have a respectable way and that is marriage. marriage is a contract and agreement between girl and boy both with their own will. if a 9 year old girl wants to marry and 25 year guy, and guy is ready to accept her, u and me can not do anything.

So? You're talking about something that happened 1,500 years ago. It was a different time and a different place with different moral conventions. Why don't the Catholics ever talk about Pope Alexander VI shagging his own daughter? That was actually considered immoral at the time it happened, unlike Mohammed marrying a girl.

Muslims are a bunch of sickos. They do all kinds of sick and disgusting crap, especially to children.

Muslims rape some children, and put bombs on others.

The reason they are so fuckedup is that crazyass religion they have.

As we speak, hellbola is launching rockets from some schoolhouse in Lebanon.

Muslims, you people are plain sick in the head.

Do you know who the Father of Lies is???Yep, the Devil....

I find it telling that throughout the history of the Bible, and beyond there have always been evil forces that set out to destroy the Jews (because they are God's chosen people.) So, to me any person or group that is trying to eliminate the jews must be of the Evil One. (Hitler...) and today, hmmmm.....the Muslims.....that should show right there that they are liars, and thieves...(generalizing)
