hummm...it is an abnormal thing for a PC when power is cut at a sudden without proper shut down, no matter how it happened either by switching off power supply at a sudden or power failure, it is same for a PC.
His thinking that PC worked normal even after sudden power failure earlier and nor it is not working after he pulled the power plug do not hold any significance. When power is cut by any means abnormally it is a miniature event for a PC between power on & power off.
If your friend has grown up with slow shut down he can try another methods which I will suggest him if he like for now to get the PC work again ask him to start PC. Is the primary booting takes properaly? If Yes, what message does it displays when it do not load windows?
If you can let me know the exact status it will be nice to suggest you next step.
He can try `Safe mode' , I think it will work. Once it get started in safe mode surely it will work in normal mode too.
Thanks.
:)

A hardisk contains a set of disks like the CD. And a needle is placed over it to read it while its working or loading any process. And normally we use a 7200 rpm hardisk ie it spins 7200 times a minute. And while shuting down it gradually decreases its speed and switches off. And if u suddenly switch it off the speed is reduced in just a fraction and it creates a jerk inside. And therefore it is crashed. It may not damage the first time u do it. But it will definitely gets damaged gradually if u do that again and again. So pls avoid switching off before it shuts down. And try using a UPS for power failures also leads to hardisk problems

It's possible a power spike can do damage to the power supply if it happened often enough, but pulling pulling the plug at shutdown can mean hard drive damage if the computer is saving information and settings on exit. It should not be done in my opinion and if he wanted to turn it off after shutdown there should be a small switch on the back of the power supply could be turned off first to prevent any arcing damage from the plug being pulled out. Good luck!
