No matter what you get him, be sure you get something in return. Take him out to lunch or some other quiet place and talk with this man. Listen to his stories (really listen). You have something so very special at your fingertips. You literally have a piece of history and a man who knows how to survive and live a little in the process. You won't have this priceless asset for ever, learn all you possibly can from him in the time remaining.

My Grandfather died in about 1956, I never knew him and now how very much I miss him. Even at 58 I could still use those hours of talk and as far as that goes, I lost my Dad entirely too soon as well. Once they are gone it is over so experience it to the maximum while it is not yet over.

BTW, I doubt he is very active so stick with the visual things. I like the portrait idea but if the gift is from you, maybe it should be of you alone. I suppose that would depend on your relationship with the man. I know my Grand kids are all special to me and a nice photo of any or all of them would be a welcome gift.

I suppose something that will help him in daily life, like a nice pillow, comfortable chair, healthy vitamine, a good book with large font printed, music / DVD he liked, and on. The point is something that adds comfort / happy to his life.
