I believe people are blankly unaware that cats, despite their smaller size, have more brain than a 60 pound dog. They are actually affectionate and only scratch or hiss or growl or basically anything they do that threatens people if they feel threatened. If you where to look back at their past, you see that they started as hunters, not housepets. Now, give me one time you heard of a domestic cat kill a person. I'm waiting.... See you can't do it because it's never happened. Now dogs, well, not so much. There are WAY more dog fatalities than shark fatalities, so the reason why cats are hated for their uncommon personality is still a big "?" for me. It just doesn't make sense. How could something so kind and sweet have such a mean and horrible reputation? I believe it started with Halloween and it's black cats. Anyway, go to some animal shelter anytime you'd care to, and I highly guarantee you will find one cat interacting with a shelter staff in a positive way. That stuck-up, mean, greedy personality cats are often accused of is the lie of the ages. I am 100% certain that all those "bad cats" had some trama in their lives causing them to set their guard up higher than usual, not that cats let their guard down. Once again it is in their blood and instinct to defend against possible threats, so understand, it's all YOUR fault if a cat shows negative reaction to you. YOU provoked it. HE/SHE defends itself against you and sees you as a possible threat. This is why cats will scratch or hiss. It's you.

The laser pointer and stick toys are interactive. Find out what kind of movements will get your cat to play the most, all are different. My youngest cat has gained a world of mobility and coordination from my husband playing with him and a fishing-rod looking toy with feathers or rafia on the end. The little furry mice and the jingle balls are really just for the cat to play with when it's feeling fiesty. Same with the milk rings. If the cat's in the mood to play, believe me it will.
Other good cat toys? My youngest loves balled up kids' socks. When he was a kitten he actually started playing fetch with these. Clear caps off of Powerade or water bottles. I got a Wooly Bully mouse from PetSmart. It cost about $5, but when it gets ratty you just put it in a sock and wash and dry it and it comes out looking like new, so it lasts forever. My oldest cat beats the living heck out of these. She also prefers the little glitter poms you can get in the craft section at Wal-Mart to the larger glitter balls in the pet store. And they're only a couple bucks for a bag of 20.
Find what your cat likes best and don't overlook the interactive toys. They like to play with their humans, too. Have fun.

Meijer has a cat toy, it's basically an animal (I have a bunny and a cat) on a string. There is a heart with catnip instead of it. It's very small. My cat LOVES those things. They are like 2.59 for a toy, and he rips them apart. Today I came home to a decapitated bunny. I taught him to fetch using it.
Otherwise, a) don't use the laster pointer. There is a lot of controversy on whether or not the laser point is good for their eyesight and they psychology (something about not being able to actually catch it?? )
b) a great free toy for my cat is toliet paper rolls. When i finish a roll of tp, i get off the scraps of paper, and throw it. He goes INSANE. He loves attacking them. Don't use foil or plastic wrap though, they could eat it and choke.

small stuffed mice? throw them, you might have your cat fetch them. At the very least, your cat will try to "kill" it. It's their instinct. If you can think how they'd behave with a similar item in the wild, you can figure out how to use them.
And if worst comes to worst, like my cats, they're happier playing with a ball of tinfoil or paper than the toy you spent good money on. lol
Have fun

talk a small bit of paper, and make a ball with it.
it's very cheap !
my cat loves it. he can run after the paper ball, and can take it with his teeth, so it's better than a real ball
