Many Christ Cultists claim that religion (particularly the Christ Cult variety) is needed to give people a moral compass. Atheists are viewed more negatively than any group in the United states because they lack morals and cant be trusted or some such..

So are we to believe that your belief in Christianity is the only thing keeping you all from robbing , murdering and Rape?

Looking around I see plenty of so called Christians killing, stealing and Raping. So what gives? Without the Jesus mumbo jumbo would all of you be running amok (worse than you are now)?

According to what they claim, and statistical information related to crimes in areas self-identifying as Christian, that is true.

But, most Christian cults teach adherents that they are exempt from (eternal) punishment for their crimes, so it's hard to imagine why they would be deterred.

Maybe that is why communities that consider themselves Christian have more criminals than other communities.

Ooh, Christ Cultist... I should use that sometime.

I dont think atheists are viewed poorly because the lack morals... They are viewed poorly because it goes against what everyone else thinks. It doesnt matter what religion you are (well, it does...) cause when someone says there isnt a God/god, they put down every religion out there, so atheists are enemies of EVERYONE, not just Christians.

Yes, you see Christians killing, stealing, and raping. But you also see atheists, buddhists, muslims, whatever doing the same thing. It's just that Christians are put out into the open more when they do something wrong, as they are viewed/mocked as being better than everyone. So when we do something wrong, atheists go out of their way to point it out and make sure it is noticed.

Now for your question... No, our beliefs are not the only thing. Sure, it helps, but there ARE good people in the world. If our beliefs were the only thing keeping us from doing wrong, then every non-Christian out there would be killing, stealing, and raping as they would have no sense of right/wrong...

Even though this is obviously an inciendiery post, i'll reply anyways. Lets take your positions one by one.

Religion is needed to give a moral compass-This is a tough one. My own view is that morality has to be in some sense transcendent. That is, it has to be above the current place and time a person is in. Religion gives a very strong basis for moral dialogue that philosophy, due to its ultimately skeptical nature can't. Christianity especially posits a moral lawgiver that is an inviolable root of all morality, and a judging point of all societal codes.

While its possible to arrive at a self-created morality,it lacks a transcendent nature beyond yourself and the time you live in, and thus, may lose the ability to enter serious dialogue. Its "what works for me" and who can really criticize what works and what doesnt?

If you are attempting to show that atheists are unjustly demonized, the tone of your post is only proving the opposite.

christianity is the only thing keeping people from being immoral-

Well, noone can really make sweeping generalizations. I'd argue however, following an established moral code as in christianity or other religions tends to focus people more on moral behavior than no code at all. If you believe your actions on this earth are rewarded or punished in a future heaven or hell, you will hopefully show more character than someone who, knowing there is no god or punishment or reward, acts whichever way he wishes as long as there is no consequence.

-looking around...

This is so blatant a misgenerlaization it isnt funny. There was one anecdote which sums up my feeling about this:

Its 10 at night, and the streets are deserted, as you walk out to your car, you see 7 burly men walking towards the lonely parking lot you are in. Would you feel any safer knowing these men had just come from bible study?

chances are you would.

I'd seriously examine your own attitudes. Its possible to be so ensnared by ideological preconceptions that you embody the traits you decry in others.

Anyone can claim to be a Christian, but if he/she continues in his\her evil then they have not truly found the way. As for your claim that Christians believe that they are the only moral people in the world, you have a false perception of Christianity. But then that isn't unusual in people who fight so hard against it, as you seem to want to do. Morality can be attained without religion. I know many very moral people who aren't particularly religious. I also believe that if you look hard enough, you will discover that all religions have prohibitions against the crimes you mentioned and that there are individuals who profess to be adherents to these religions that are guilty of evil. I certainly don't believe that the men who blew up the World Trade Center are representative of the majority of Muslims.

I am very sorry that you have had such a negative experience with Christians. Perhaps it is because you haven't met the right ones.

Hi!

We first need to understand what Christianity is....

TRUE CHRISTIANITY is the life of Jesus Christ through the Holy Spirit entering and changing the heart of a repentant sinner.Being born again!

Please understand that this a A HAPPENNING and AN EXPERIENCE...It is not a decision to adopt a new way of living, neither is it the knowledge of the bible!!!

You will probably come across a lot of people who call themselves "Christians" but nothing close to the life of Jesus Christ resembles their lives. Please note such people!

Anyway if you are not a Christian yoursel, you will not have exerienced the REALITY OF THE HOLY SPIRIT as a result you would not be able to discern the TRUE CHRISTIAN from the fake ones!

Another point is that Christians are NOT perfect people....that is the reason they decided to trust in the Blood of Jesus Christ to wash their sins...We came to Christ because we were RAPIST, KILLERS, HOMOSEXUALS, RACIST, WITCHES, LIARS, DISOBEDIENT CHILDREN, IMPATIENT, HYPOCRITES, THIEVES etc. before we came to Christ!

A true Holy Spirit filled persons is NEVER THE SAME OVER THE MONTHS...

If you live in the Holy Spirit, you will not fulfill the lusts of sin...but those who do not walk in the Holy Spirit will definitely do those things you mentioned.

I just asked a question that might interest you, please check my recent question and the answers.

Hope this helps.

Hug!

cultist is a bit harsh isnt it? being a christian doesnt mean you are no longer human, it means you have made a conscience decision to live life for a greater power. christians are subject to the same folly as everyone else running around on the planet. atheists are only harshly regarded due to the religious atmosphere that has gripped the planet, since about the fall of the roman empire. when someone believes in Christ, they are asking for eternal life, not to be stopped from robbing, murdering and rape.

Actually.......its not Christianity, it seems that way because.........

a. most Americans are Christian/ religiouus (thank God)

b. american society has deteriorated so much its pitiful, people don't know what its like to SUFFER like many other countries have, and most of us get away with way too much bs....theres just about NO morality, NO common sence, NO selflessness, just selfishness.......family values are fading....everybodiy's hating (no pun intended), its never compliments, just insults.... its never about doing whats right, just the fastest road to self gratification. Ignorance, quickness to anger, and stupidity are becoming contagious.......

c. yes I agree with the part "so called"....but thats a hypocritical stereotype (like the part that you're supossedly an "american", but you could follow what i said in b.......and besides its not "jesus mumbo-jumbo.......its the TRUTH, and thats what im hear to seek out, not more ignorant people who cant go a minute without clustering on yahoo answers to try and form the new extremist-leftist-simpathetic for the devil-neo-Nazi group

you are right... most people who are Christian CHOOSE not to rape, murder or steal due to the 'hell' factor... but also remember that it doesn't keep those horrible things from happening to us... Christianity is based on doing good, rather than bad. it makes the world much more of an acceptable place for us to function as 'good' people. don't be fooled by those who THINK they are true Christians... they are actually the ones who make us look bad... Karma plays a big part in our way of living... 'everything has an equal and opposite reaction'... if you are good, then good will happen to you... if you are bad, then expect for the wrong to happen... as long as you are doing the right thing, then the Christian way will follow you... Faith is much more of a greater way of thinking that it can change ANYONE's perspective on the way they live

Ah, yes ... the rational basis for nontheism.

Assuming God really does exist, wouldn't he have reasons for the commands he gives humans? Wouldn't it be better to try to understand those reasons than to simply follow orders without question? If you only follow orders, what happens when you come to a new situation that you don't have any orders for?

If you try to understand the rational basis for morality, then you can apply it to new and original situations and you are less likely to be led astray by false prophets and their self-proclaimed "word of God."

In the end, God is irrelevant. The need for morality is inherent to human existence and does not depend on the whims of a deity.

Christians aren't perfect, you got it all wrong. If we were perfect we wouldn't follow God ;). Thats a fact, but the truth is christians do everything you listed up there. Not all of them, but some do. Our beliefs are just attempts to make us better humans, so that we can worship the one and only God.
