Nowadays, the attitude is shifting and is more accepting of individuals who have piercings and tattoos. I am going to school to be a teacher, and there are several people I know who would definitely make positive impacts on their students. However, piercings can be okay if they are not over done and are more subdued. I have worked in the elementary school system for 15 years, and am starting to see the change, but there are still some old fogies who just past judgement and don't give the person a hello. So, no, tattoos are okay.

Teachers of today look very different from teachers even 10 years ago. Since I am a "young" teacher ---28--- and at least half of the teachers in my building are in their 20's my high school probably breaks the mold a bit. There is a Latino male teacher with corn rows that go to his mid back and there are several teachers who have small tattoos. I would say that the fashion is the big thing: tighter and shorter clothing that is in fashion now as opposed to 10 years ago. Wearing jeans is not a big deal at all and you will certainly see teachers in flip flops. As far as tattoos that are more visible or piercing in the nose, lip, eyebrow, tongue or other non ear places is not that common in my school. I think that even for our laid back environment it is still considered to be too extreme. Schools just a few miles away from mine, however, have strict dress codes for their teachers requiring button down shirts and ties every day. All of this is in NYS, a pretty liberal place. I can only imagine what the dress requirements are in other states. That all being said, although the public and the students may be ready for non traditional looking teachers, the administrations and the school boards are not. There is just this perception of what a teacher is supposed to look and act like. I know of a teacher from Florida who was fired for living with her fiancé before they got married. So, imo, teachers should be able to look what ever way they want but if they do so they should be prepared to not be able to get a job in teaching.

Tattoos and piercings have nothing to do with the quality of the teacher. The teacher should make an effort to have less piercings than some, but tattoos are just a form of expression. To discriminate and be offended because of expression would be wrong. You need to meet the teacher and form your opinion of the person based on the quality of the person.

I have tattoos but I cover them up when going to the kids school.I dont think teachers are setting a good example by wearing piercings or showing tattoos...What kind of school allows that?It should be in the dress code right?

I think I would actually prefer a teacher with piercings and/or tattoos for my children. It is all a form of self expression & it shows the children that expressing yourself is perfectly acceptable. Both of my kids were with me when I got my tattoo & they both loved the entire experience. People are slowly becoming more openminded toward this sort of things. But just the fact that you even had to ask this question shows you that tho we are moving forward, it is at a snail's pace. Not saying shame on you for asking, but saying that enough people would object that it makes the question even askable.

I'd have no problems with it, since I have many tattoos and piercings. Just as long as the teacher was a good teacher and a nice person, it would be fine. Unfortunately schools are not open to such alternative things such as that, so I guess it's just a nice dream.

If they are a good teacher, what does it matter if they have piercings and tattoos? I would rather my child have a great teacher that doesn't have the typical look than a bad teacher who looks like she/he is ready to go to church.
It will also teach your child to not be judgmental.

I wouldn't grade a person by thier appearence. What if someone had covered tattoos? Does it really matter? As long as the teacher is delivering a fair and balanced education for your child, I don't see a problem.

tattoos and peircings have NOTHING to do with the teacher's ability to teach . . . that is being stereotypical that anone with a tattoo or peircing is a badas* . . . a tatto that is offensive in nature, however, that may say something derrogatory or be of a violent of sexual nature, I would rather was covered so as to not convey a message to a child that they are not ready to understand . . . most people with tattoos know when it is the proper time to cover it or show it off . . .

Tattoos and piercings have nothing to do with whether or not that person is a good teacher. they are expressing themselves, and I think that is a great quality to teach children.
