1 year in Iraq when the war first started.

When I was 10 or 11 my father, who had a really frightening temper, got angry at my sister (four years younger than me) for something or other. He'd slapped me so hard he'd broken a blood vessel under my eye before, and shaken me until my mother managed to beat him into dropping me to go after her, so I knew what he was capable of. My sister came into my room, and I didn't know what else to do, so I hid her under my desk. He came in, tearing through my things and throwing them everywhere, asking me where she'd gone. I was about as scared as a 10 year old can be, but I told him I didn't know, and by some miracle he believed me. When he came back about 30 minutes later, my sister was still crying under the desk, but he wasn't angry anymore; he was afraid that my sister was lost, and he was happy to see her when she came out.
