You see so many stories on the news about mothers who have babies and either kill them or leave them in horrilble places. What are these women thinking? If you aren't ready to be a mother, then at least make sure your baby is in a safe place before you leave it alone to die. Can anyone explain this to me?

I have read a few answers already, and I'd like to add a few comments. I can understand a woman feeling that she is not ready for the child, or that she was raped. But the one question everyone has forgotten to answer is why would a woman choose to leave their child in an unsafe place? Why not put them up for adoption or leave them in a hospital or police station?

I can not answer this from personal experience - I would never give up a child, even if it was disabled.
I think women who do this a pschologically damaged in some way or another - the baby could be the result of a rape and it got too much for them when the baby actually came along. it could also be religious reasons - they hid the pregnancy from their parents the whole way through and could no longer do so once the child was born...
I'm not really sure if this is any help, but why do you ask this question?

Too many circumstances to write out. But many of these cases involve teenagers who got themselves pregnant, then didn't know what to do, and ended up carrying the baby to term. Think about it, you're 14, just given birth, afraid that your parents will disown you, have no other means of support, cold, tired, and suffering from blood loss from the birth. To them, the only way out would be abandonment, then the whole thing would just 'go away'.
Other times the child could be a result of a rape, incest, whatever, and so the baby is, in the mother's mind, associated with that event, and thus a constant and painful reminder. Not something that they would want to keep around as evidence of a shameful secret.

Some women don't know how to be a parent, but she does not have the option of walking away in the beginning (the way a male would). If she doesn't have family support or means to deal with the day-to-day pressure, abandonment seems like a good option. People glamorize pregnancy and some girls rush into it and are not prepared for the responsibilities. I'm not justifying it or excusing it, but I can empathize with why some mothers snap and run away or kill their children. In the past, relatives and friends and neighbors helped. Now, women are basically expected to do it all with a smile on her face 24/7. It's not a task to be taken lightly.

I guess some woman can't handle the pressure of having a baby. I will never understand what motivates them to do this, as I like to think of myself as a good mother, and I would never hurt my son. Everything I do is for him. I see women out there that totally neglect their children and they don't even realize it. Its really sad when you see 1 1/2 year old and she doesn't laugh or cry, it makes you wonder why. If my son didn't laugh or cry I would know that I wasn't doing my job as a mother to keep him safe and happy.

No one can really answer that question but a woman who has been there, and done that. They're the only ones who know what they're thinking at the time.
My opinion is that when they have these children, they have not yet formed a bond with it, and it's an object not a being. It's easier to disassociate yourself from an object than it is to from a being. Right?

I don't get why. I think it horrific. I think some "MUMS"( i use the term loosely) are so doped up i don't think they care. A sad thing in this day and age when there are so many people wanting children but unable to have them

How can a compassionate person really understand why these women do these things. Its appalling. Maybe they have a mental disease or they are just cold hearted and scared.
