I've done this before and the best thing I can recommend is using Clairol Natural Instincts in a dark brown. It's a semi-permanent dye and it will probably fade a bit after a couple weeks and you'll want to dye it again. But since it's a semi-permanent it won't be as damaging as a permanent dye. I love using the product since it blends you don't ever have to touch up your roots like you would with a permanent. And share with other people the horror of bleaching hair, I always do since I ruined my hair that way in high school!

good question. if you are going to dye you hair black. dark brown or med brown. dye your hair a red shade in that level of colour first. ie if you going back to med brown,. dye it red med brown first then brown on top. if you dying it light brown dark blonde to med brown. dye it a coppery gold colour of the same level first then the straight colour.. if any lighter just the str8t colour will be fine.. if you do colour it darker first and it does go greener. just colour it a red colour of the same shade as the red will neutralize any green... this is what we do in the salon. darkening hair is still damaging but not as damaging as lightening it

i would go to your local sallys beauty supply and get a semi permament hair dye in the dark shad e you want. this will wash off after a while but i wont damage your hair so you could do that till your hair is healthy enough to dye it pemamently. and do lots of hot oil treatments to soften up and strenghten your hair. add oils to your hair to and deep condition your hair
HOPE THAT HELPS!!

Color is only damaging when you go lighter. When you dye it darker it doesn't damage it at all.

See a professional colorist. He/she would know how to get the result you want.
