The things that mean the most involve connecting with new parts of each other.

There are books with 10,001 romantic ideas that he could use, if he wanted to. There are books that suggest fun and exciting dating ideas.

You could go to a bookstore and read poems to each other.
You could go country & western line-dancing.
You could go hiking or take a day hike.
You could ride bikes, or horses together.
You could go wine/cheese/chocolate tasting.
You could go to a local orchestral concert (they are often inexpensive and fun).
You could practice for, and run a half marathon together. Thats a beautiful demonstration of commitment and team-work. Team In Training is a great organization to work through.
You could go to art classes at your local community center or community college together.
You could volunteer together at a local old-folks-home or "retirement center" and see how the other cares for people when they are old.
You could go play video games together at an arcade.
You could go to the park and feed the ducks, and have a picnic on a blanket, and watch the sunset.

The things you do together outside, that involve work, and maybe being uncomfortable really show the parts that mean more in a long-term relationship. When its fun and easy anyone can stick around, but unless you are willing to work through the hard parts you dont get to get to the best parts.

Try something neither of you have done before. Like horseback riding maybe? I don't know where you live, so that may be out of the question ( Like a city). I know this sounds corny, but how about board games. Have some friends over to play, like pictionary, trivial pursuit, etc. Or just the 2 of you.
How about just a nice drive, someplace in the state you've never been? Nothing like a little adventure. Take a weekend and a credit card, and just get lost, see some new things. ( Bring a map, you don't want to get TOO lost). Leave your cell phones off during the trip, unless you expect some really important call.
You guys must have a common interest or two. Sit down and think about it. Be spontaneous when you decide.
Hope this helps. Good luck and have fun.

you can do the cliche thing and go to the movies and get some dinner or....
-try a baseball game, for some reason they are always more fun when you are actually there.
-Hiking is always fun. Bring some rock climbing shoes and during the hike, make a few stops a do some bouldering.
-Go to a pier and rent some bicycles.Cruise around the pier and explore.
-Go to the nearest city and explore. Find new places to hang out and new restraunts to eat at.
-Go to the beach and hang out all day. When night fall hits, have a bon fire
-fish off a dock after midnight until the sun comes up. Make sure to bring redbull and some music.

There's lots of stuff you can do. It also depends on where you live and how close you are to places. Good Luck!!
