God is neither male nor female. He is GOD. We use masculine terms like "he" and "him" I guess because that's just what's used in the Bible and we can't exactly call God "it". Some people may have the image of him in their minds as a "he", but in reality God can not be male or female since he is not a physical being. He is a spiritual being.
Also, the Bible says that both men AND women were created in the image of God.

God is Spirit and is all things, he is both male and female and neither male not female. He doesn't require gender, it is a human concept. Unfortunately, because almost all beings that we know about do require gender and because life as we know it is therefore divided into two genders, male and female, we do not have a words in our languages that don't require a choice of gender. So, because the male of our species has been in charge of religious writings for several thousand years, man has chosen to adopt the masculine form of the Deity. Archeology teaches us, however, that in earlier times the Deity was considered female and it was not until the advent of agriculture and civilization that the male became the dominant Deity. Therefore, you can refer to Him/Her anyway you see Her\Him.

Genesis
Chapter 1, Verse 26
Then God said, "Let us make man in our image, in our likeness, and let them rule over the fish of the sea and the birds of the air, over the livestock, over all the earth, and over all the creatures that move along the ground."
Genesis
Chapter 1, Verse 27
So God created man in his own image,
in the image of God he created him;
male and female he created them.

Because in the English language, the most politcally correct term for God would be "it", which would likely offend most theists by reducing God to an "it". Because of this, God is referred to as a "He". God is a spirit, and is about as male as a pillow.

I am a Hindu. In our religion, we have a male god and female god. So there is no confusion like the way they have it in other religion.

Perhaps the ancients knew more than we think they did - X is a female chromosome and Y is a male chromosome - females are XX and males are XY - males thus have both male and female chromosomes so are more complete. food for thought, eh?

Because the Bible states that God (He) created man in his own image - maybe "man" was as close as it gets to being god... Although I do have to mention that Jesus referred to God as: Father, creator and Abba - which is the Hebrew name for father...
I believe that 'it' is a He because Jesus said so himself and God talked (and probably appeared) to Jesus many times...
We as christians believe that He is a "he" because He takes care of us - just as our earthly fathers do!

God is spirit. The bible has not told us if he has a gender or not, I just use the term he/she/it as a pronoun for God.
The bible is the word of God as spoken by the prophets. The prophets use a gender specific language. What more, God name as given to Moses is "I am that I am". There is no gender there as well.
In answer to your question, people think God is a spirit (wind) and they worship him/her/it in spirit and in truth.
