I would use a nice wire crate, with some crate fans and some of that cloth they sell at pet stores to block out any sunlight.
Make sure your dog has plenty of water and a veterinary health check before for travelling. The vet should give you a certificate certifying your dog has had all its vaccinations. If you want your dog to travel as co-pilot, I suggest a doggie seatbelt, but still have the crate for stops. You can put your dog into the crate and leave the back of the van open for a short time if you have to go somewhere a dog isn't allowed.
I moved from Alaska to Nevada driving a minivan with 2-4 dogs at one time. It actually can work very well. good luck.

Definitely not let your pet travel around the car. It's so dangerous and distracting to you as the driver. Also if your pet is a dog, don't let it stick its head out the window; debris could hit the eyes, nose, mouth and cause severe injury.
The options you have is to either secure your pet in a seatbelt specifially designed for dogs or cats, or you can crate them and put them in the back of the car. Make sure they have water available to them, especially if it's a long trip with few stops...
Good luck!

the safest way to travel with a pet is for them to be crated in the back of the van. This way, they can not get hurt and if they get car sick, it is easier to Clean up. If you ere in an accident, the animal could get thrown out of the van, or it could come flying up into the front and hit you and hurt or kill you and the animal. Just make sure that you stop often to give water, bathroom breaks and exercise the pet.

This depends on your pet. If it is used to riding in the vehicle then by all means, let it sit in the co-pilot seat. If it isn't so used to going for car rides, try a few test runs. Go to the gas station, the park, anywhere and see what your pet's reaction is. Cats generally try to hide under seats, but dogs seem to calm down and just hang out. My dogs never rode in a car until I adopted them, now they're more than happy to climb in and go anywhere with me. One of my cats is a real mellow rider, but only for short distances, the other kitten freaks out and rides on the head rest of the passenger seat. I have to put her in a cage to keep her calm.

Yes, keep your pet in a cage when you are traveling. This could keep them from getting hurt if you get into an accident and also prevent them from possibly causing you to wreck your vehicle. If you love your pet keep him caged during travel but stop often and let them out to stretch.

yes, let the pet walk around the van at all times and do not imprison it in a cage. let it have freedom and give it some treats for being such a patient pet. also, stop regulary so your pet wont be car sick and let it have some fresh air outside. follow these steps and youll have a happy healthy pet.
