Lie down flat on your back (no pillow) and let your arms rest at your sides. Imagine yourself melting into the mattress or floor and breathe in and out. It should really relax you and help you get to sleep.

There are several reasons why a person might not go to sleep.
1. You ate something that is stimulating your system. Spicy foods, sweet food, and foods with caffeine, can keep you up. If that is the problem, you are probably out of luck. Maybe a glass of warm milk will counteract them, so give it a try. Relax and, at least, rest your body. You might accidentally go to sleep if you lie still and daydream about some great place to take a vacation.
2. You are worrying about something. Well, in that case, the mind is busy worrying and you need to lead it away from that. How to do this? It is called visualization. Don't try to think words. Picture in your mind a park or forest path or calm beach. Imagine something happening there that you like. Wading in the water, walking down the shadowed path, flying a kite... anything nice and not too exciting. See the colors and feel the breeze. Enjoy the scene. Imagine a nice place to sit down and look around at what you might see... relax and you will have a nice dream.
3. There is noise in your environment which is keeping you awake. If this is a recurring event, invest in 'Noise Cancelling Earphones." These are able to erase the sounds in the environment so that you can listen to your music. Listen to the music that puts you to sleep, not that makes you want to dance! hahaha
;-D Enjoy a good sleep!

-drink a glass of warm milk ( remember reading that the Potassium in milk helps you fall asleep ).
- When I was growing up, I used to find that sleeping with my chest facing the bed, or sleeping on my side helped me fall asleep faster, especially when I had trouble falling asleep.
- Maybe you could try sleeping at a different place, the couch for instance
- try to sleep upside down in your bed, your feet touching the pillow and your head positioned at where your feet used to be...
- try changing your pillows, or at least the pillow covers ( the point is to try to create a different sleeping environment )

This works wonders. Lay in a comfortable position, then start contracting and relaxing your muscles starting with your toes and ending with your forehead. Make sure to tighten them good (for maybe a 5-10 count), then focus on really getting them to relax (you're focusing on the relaxation and not on what's keeping you up.) If you make a conscience effort to relax your muscles, they will become more relaxed and so will your mind. I usually don't make it to my fingers.

Watch the History Channel or C-Span.
Seriously, no mid-day naps, no caffeine or exercise for at least an hour before bedtime, and consider meditation if you need to calm your mind.

Drink some chamomile tea before bed. Put a couple drops of lavender oil on your pillow. Talk to God.
