Everyone has answered this based on the assumption that the person is an alcoholic but not enough information is given to provide an educated answer. It is necessary to know if the person is an alcoholic and how long they have been an alcoholic. If only a binge drinker, then there is usually no "withdrawal" when ceasing alcohol.
If a long time alcoholic, it is best not to dry out alone. It should only be done in a medically supervised environment.

Well now that all depends on several things. 1)are you a consistent heavy drinker 2)are you a binge drinker 3) social drinker only. It all depends on what kind of alcoholic you are and what kind of support you have yourself set up with. Try webmd for the most professional advice that's confidential and free. Also AA is very good program for assistance even going one time is enough to get tons of resources. The side effects are most likely going to be the least of your problems.

Detox. It is very dangerous. You should be getting you vital signs taken 3 times a day as you come off alcohol. You should probably be in the hospital if you are a true alcoholic.
