Hi Barb, will you be in Bangkok or Rayong? If you are in rayong, you actually can spend lesser than you are in Bangkok. Accommodation cost is lower and food is also cheaper. Plus the fact that Rayong is on the coast, seafood is cheap and fresh too. A seafood meal will cost you about US$15, if you go local food, you can spend lesser. So having US$50 a day can be plenty there. The other question is where are you planning to sightsee?
From Rayong, you can get to Pattaya just an hour drive away. Well, over there, there will be higher cost being a more frequented tourist spot. You are likely to spend more. A typical seafood meal there will set you back about US$20, though still reat and fresh too. Best is to go to the southern stretch of the city, where mostly the locals go. Cheaper than the northern part of town. There will be more to see there, can easily get a tour package from any travel agency there, including Tiffany Show,.So your spending cost will be higher, maybe like US$80 a day, including some tour cost.
If you are in Bangkok, the price will be a bit more. Seafood meal will cost about US$25, but not as fresh as in Pattaya or Rayong. The usual sights in the city can be booked with any tour agency in town. Price per package ranges from 500bahts to about 1700bahts, sometime including meal depending if it is half or full day affair. Budget about US$100/day will be more than enough to have a good time.
Hope this helps.

Let me add a couple of things. 50 pounds should be more than enough per day if you have already paid your housing costs. As karazyal said, book something near the Skytrain and the city is pretty much yours. You can buy tourist or commuter cards and the cost of transport will drop dramatically. Taxis are also cheap and plentiful. Chiang Mai and Laos are sort of in opposite directions so, you might be better served to plan two separate trips. Aside from 10 days in BKK, how long are you spending in Thailand and SE Asia? Also as karazyal said, BKK is a normal arrival and departure point. For me, I see BKK through very different eyes after I've been in country for a while. I like spending time there as I come and go. That said, the city will wear you out. Hustle and Bustle is one thing. Heat and humidity will slow you right down. :) Don't forget to plan some down time while you are there.

street food and thai style food court food can be quite reasonable - $1 a meal.. taxis are cheap - and the most fun will be to just walk around the streets and check things out.. do some people watching, sit in Lumpini Park.. - if you want to take some bus style day trips, then most are like $30-40.. You do not need to spend a lot of money though you might find that you will because the value for the dollar is extraordinary.. get yourself a lovely 1 hr foot massage for $6.. - something you might not spend for back home - - have a great time - ATMs are near everywhere..

I travelled to Bangkok last year. Once you pay for the cost of actually getting there, everything is cheap. To my surprise, most of the places there used Yen as a currency, meaning that everything was incredibley cheap once I converted my US dollars. Considering this, go to a local currency exchange and trade about 200 dollars in for Yen. Does that sound low? It isn't. I made the mistake of bringing several thousand dollars, only to find that I only needed an exact total of $203.45 USD. I lost my wallet, and that was over 1.5K down the drain.

you don't need much. Really it depends on how much money you have and what you want to spend it on. You could get by on as little as 15 USD a day. Easily. I only payed 3 USD a night for a tiny little room. Then I ate street food. But I also did that so I could spend all of the rest of my money buying things such as jewlery and purses for family and friends.
