break up all that red by putting a huge black circle on each wall. Then maybe hang the lanterns on each wall where they hang centered in the circle... and the lanterns can't be stark white, they need to be more like natural rice paper looking, so if you have them all ready, make a very weak tea and spritze them with the tea and let them dry, it will darken the paper slightly, and green tea looks really good, just a hint of green, and it's very japanese.

I would leave the walls a pale color. Dark will only make it darker and more depressing, especially in the winter, and the room will seem so much smaller. You can go for a pale beige or very pale red tone, and use the darker colours for trimmings, like the door frames and the border.
Your decor should be practical as well, so you have to consider whether you want stuff hangind all over the place. However, a pale wall with a red border at the top and some gold Asian lettering is a good start. I would have a low bed, like a futon with red and gold linens. You can buy cheap lanterns for the light fitting (make sure is fire safe), and bamboo style shades for the window. I hate clutter, so I would stop there, but if you can handle it, you can have throw rugs and pillows to match. Chinese lanterns would probably be best hung in a cluster in an empty corner. Keep the walls clear aside from one large wall hanging =- a tapestry would do well above the bed or opposite to the bed. You might want to invest in a small table top fountain for your dressing table or another empty corner.
Good luck!

Use wood trim painted black to line between the ceiling and the walls
also , you can use a chair rail painted black also ... My friend ( who's son is a big time karate nut ) re - did his room exactly the way you are talking... red walls , with the black wood trim, and a chair rail, with bamboo ( dark ) on the bottom half. Bamboo blinds, and various
small touches , like plaques with the chinese symbols for " Luck, Happiness, etc. ( these were just thin pieces of wood , painted black, with the symbols hand painted in red ... very easy , and cheap, and they look great ... Hit the nearby " Dollar Tree " , or " all for a Dollar " and look for oriental type stuff.. they always have tons. Buy / make some simple wood shelves , paint them black, and stock them stuff from the dollar store .. The store near me has
lacquered stones, small old looking containers , even a sets of
chop sticks and bowls ... VERY neat looking .. They also have bamboo " placemats " for the dining room, but they could be hung on the wall as art , or a backgroung for art I also have som very nice Oriental art prints in my files here ... If you have a way to print them , I can send them to you ... Some are modern, and some are photo - art from the 1920's and quite beautiful. these can be printed , and framed ... If you'd like to see them , drop me a line at

Maybe you can paint Chinese Symbols in black on your wall. Try to find an Asian store near you to decorate your room. I did that and have a lot of Asian pottery and lots of statues and dragons and inscense burners. Maybe buy an Asian rug, or those bamboo wall hangings are really cool too. Also at the mall you can find stores that sell cool lights and such and you could find some small waterfall lights or chinese lanterns. Also candles. Just try not to clutter it too much and look up some stuff on feng shui.

Unless your bedroom is fairly large, you may want to reconsider red walls, since they will make the room seem smaller. My kitchen is Asian themed, and I left the walls white and used black and red accents. I have black framed wall mirrors, black furniture, and black cabinets with red asian characters. The bamboo you already have might look good as a wall hanging or even a faux headboard. Red walls would be awesome, if you have a room that can support it.

Add some prints of chinese symbols, representing health or love, etc. also fans are nice, one large one, or several small ones, you can find plain ones and attach silk flowers to them, or find silkscreened ones, all very pretty. If you can't do all your walls red, you could either do 3 white and one red, or top half white, and bottom red, with a black lacquer chair rail. Don't forget some satin throw pillows for the bed. Have fun!

Black accessories such as candles & candle holders are good. Black curtains would work, too.
Maybe find some Asian symbols and have them printed along the wall like a border?
I've seen some neat jewelry boxes, shelves, and lamps done with sort of a bamboo looking exterior in deep dark reds (almost blacks) that look very Asian, too.

I personally hate Asian themes but whatever. Add some red silk and one of those room dividers that fold.
