I am 18, becoming a server at a restaurant with a full bar. The manager told me to get a book about alcohol to increase my knowledge about beer, wine, and mixed drinks. Any tips or suggestions?

Mixed drinks, get a bartenders guide. For beer, most people know what they like and order it. For wine, that can be a lifelong study, but there is a book called "Wine for Dummies" which will give you all you need to know in a concise form.

Pick up a Cocktail Book---the little paperback ones the grocery stores have in the aisles of the checkout. Unless you want to spend a lot of money on a hard cover book. Learn the ingredients and names of alcohol, they are usually up-to-date.

Memorize the Restaurant's cocktail menus and wine lists. Ask co-employees for help.

Spirits---Gin, Vodka, Rum, Brandy, Whisky, Cognac, etc.-- they are the big boys with atleast 40% alcohol by volume.

Fortified Wine--- Sherry (dry or creamy)

Wine---- Reds, Whites, Chardonnay, Cabernet, Merlot, Pinot, Bordeaux, Burgundy,Chianti, etc.---- way less effective, about 11%- 18% alcohol by volume

Beer--- all you can drink

dont drink to much, it affects you according to your weight, a person weighing less , will be more affected by the same amount than a person weighing more, it takes about 1 hr for your body to get rid of the affects of i can of beer , or 1 shot of whiskey, or wine.

where are you from? As far as I know you can't serve up drinks till your 21. So turn your boss in, you still have 3 years to worry about that.
