I would check out shelters for specific breeds. For instance I live in San Francisco, and I had to give up my Black Lab. There is a local place that shelters just Black Labs until they can find the dog a good home. So going to these kinds of shelters do a few things, you are adopting an animal from a place that has some history on the dog since the owner had enough sense to take them there, you are getting a specific type of breed, and you are rescuing a dog from a life at a shelter. Good Luck to you!! Oh, just a suggestion, I now have a Bichon Frise. They do not get too big, they have curly hair that doesn't shed too much, and are VERY SMART. Good Luck to you.

I feel for your loss, but if you want a dog for less than $100 then go to your shelter. Some shelters have a higher adoption fee, but there's some where the fee is less than $100.

http://www.hoobly.com/10794/42/0/
http://www.tlcanimalaid.org/dogs.html (adoption fee $200)
Sorry to hear about the loss of your daughter's pet dog and I hope you find a GREAT new puppy for her!
Warmly,

You can also try petfinder.com or the ASPCA. Also, keep trying with the local shelters; they get new animals in ALL the time!! Good luck! :)
