Everything on TV is made up. People watching it don't keep that in mind, and as a consequence they think that real life is like life on TV. Because of this, they don't act naturally toward each other.

It's human nature to copy, and when most of what you copy is from TV, your life is largely fake, too. Not only family relationships, but ALL human relationships would be better without the unreal interference from make-believe relationships shown on TV.

The computer is different, though. You can interact with real people on the Internet, instead of sitting by while other people dump junk into your head by way of your boob tube.

TV can be a vast wasteland with shows like the reality shows currently en vogue, dreck like Jerry Springer or Ricki Lake, soap operas, South Park, Beavis & Butthead, other mindless drivel. It can divide families because families no longer eat together or talk about important things, TV & the Internet can both be divisive & wastes of time sitting in front of a screen. The technology ( for tv & the Internet & computer games ) is wonderful, but the content can either enrich one or put one's soul on ice. I have met many wonderful people on the net, some of whom I would like to see someday, & I have wasted my time at web - sites devoted to lavishing devotion on child stars who left the business 20 + years ago & TV shows that left the air & went into limbo, just as an example. Read something by Harlan Ellison. He thinks that TV can be mind - numbing ( Read " The Glass Teat " ) & he ain't so keen on the Internet, either, because he contends that it is "..... The death of the written word ", though I differ with him on that. somewhat. Additionally - TV can also present unrealistic images of what is " trendy ", au currant ", " what the 'beautiful people' are wearing / doing ", promoting unrealistic body images, unhealthy lifestyles - people don't smoke on tv, but they still show people going for the hard stuff, booze & drugs. The programs during the 50's were no better - The families presented in " Leave It To Beaver " & " Father Knows Best " were too ideal, even for the squeaky - clean 50's. ( I mean - Married couples sleeping in separate beds ? No bathrooms shown on set ? Sheeshhhh.... Stuff & Nonsense & a tissue of lies, I tell you !!! ) " The Brady Bunch " could have come off of an assembly line or genetic engineering lab. I oft times had trouble when my parents argued, because tv families RARELY argued, & it scared me bloodless, because I thought they were headed for the divorce court. Just some extra thoughts.

100% yes, i'm not that old, but i remember sitting at the dinner table together and talking....etc. Nowdays, everyone is running off to watch a show, or look up stuff on the internet. I think i talk to my mother more in emails than i do in person.....i think family life would be GREAT without the TV or computer!

No. I think TV, in general, is helpful for parents. If parents can park their kids in front of a TV for about an hour a day it helps give parents time to do chores without having to entertain. Also, if programs are monitored it may help with development/ learning. Same goes with the computer.

No, we have to move ahead with technology. The cleverness lies in how we manage life with TV. There are some wonderful programs that teach us, update us, and make us know what is happening around us. TV does help, but plan your programs to be watched carefully.

Say YES to TV

On TV today is so many things that are not good family value type shows... You cannot watch a movie without --sex scene-- I really don't like that when I'm watching with my girls.. TV can go as far as i am concerned..

Absolutely. No question about it. TV has so much garbage now, I'm glad my kids are grown, but I worry about my grandkids. In place of TV, our families could have REAL time together.

Computer - well, I know plenty of great families who don't have one, and some who do.
