I've heard that if holes aren't poked in a potato when microwaving it, the steam will build up and cause it to explode. Has this ever happened to anyone, or is it true???

Yes it can! And it's a mess to cleanup too! The potato gets so hot that when you grab it to pull it out the pressure releases and causes it to explode. Also over cooking it can make it explode too.

I rub mine with salt, poke holes in it and wrap them in plastic wrap or wax paper, then cook.

Potatoes exploding in microwaves I never experienced before. But the fact that holes are poked into potatoes before putting it in microwaves are actually to let it cook faster. Make sure you just have enough water to submerge the potatoes when you boil them in the microwave. I DO experience EGGS exploding in the microwave when I tried to boil it without enough water. IT WAS A MESS! AND IT SOUNDED LIKE A BOMB EXPLODED! I was shocked but at the same time, laughed like hell when I see the yolks and egg whites splattered in the microwave... but then on the other hand, it can be devastating if it were a real bomb exploding upon impact on someone. eeeeeeewwww.. just imagine.

But the fact is, potatoes have thinner and softer skin so it doesn't explode, it just cracks open, whereas eggs have a hard shell and hence the explosion coz the steam from cooking the egg inside cannot get out.

YES! If cooked long enough, don't try it unless you are willing to clean up the mess. Just like Miss Darkness, I've had eggs blow up on ,me & I tripped out because it sounded like a gun going off, I ducked. The mess took me almost 1/2 an hour to clean up. I hear small rodents, or other small mammals are cool also. nah!....just kidding, don't call the ASPCA , or PETA on me, I would never do that, I volunteer for The Hawaiian Humane Society.

Yeppers, and it may explode even if holes are poked in it, depending on how your microwave works.

Giant mess - by all means cut an X into your potato skin.

Also - you can then wrap it in a moist paper towel. That makes for a better tasting potato.

yes, When you microwave a potato, steam builds up inside of it, if you don't put holes in it, the steam will have no where to escape and Kaboom!......

Yes, the holes provide a place for steam to escape otherwise it will burst.

YES! You put in one and it seems like you are cleaning up three! Same with boiled eggs. A terrible mess.
