well for my rabbit we just stick a big water bottle in the freezer, let it freeze and then let them lay against it.... that's what i use to cool my rabbit off.

they pant lick dogs, poor kitties, but just make sure they have cool water (my kitty loves condensation she'll like the out side of the soda can silly kitty!) ice cubes in the kitties water may be a special treat for them.
Don't cut their fur! They actually gives them some protection from the heat, oh and kitty love a cool tub. So after your shower run cold water in the tub, than (when it's dry/dryer and cool) put them in the tub, if they stay than you know they like it. My kitties naturally go to the tub, they like it especially if water slowly drips (even if their water bowl is full) and they'll go to the tub to cool off. So they taught me that was what they like, I never would have though of it other wise. I'm assuming you have a ceramic type tub.

Just provide them with fresh cool water. My cats like to lay in front of the fans.

if they're long hairs, you should probably get them a trim--you should probably get them a nice looking professional trim if you don't have any experience in it yourself.
I don't think cat's have sweat glands though, so petting is just part of what they do. If you have AC in any parts of the house, keep them around that, or try fans with ice behind them (poor person's AC). Basically, if you're keeping cool in a room then your cats should hang around you.

soak a thin towel ( or a hangerchief) in room temperature water, wring it well, wrap it around the neck of the cat , use a safety- pin , so it will not fall.
It works for dogs too!

cool water spritzs and plenty of fresh, cool water, not cold because it will upset their stomaches much like ours get upset when we come in from the heat and drink something very cold, you don't want them to vomit food because that what keeps their energy up during these hot days of summer.

my cat likes to lay on a cool surface, such as tile, and we keep the air conditioner on, so he's fine with the temperature. i like to slip an occasional ice cube into my cat's water bowl, and he seems to be fine with the hot weather. i hope these suggestions are useful to you :)
