If you wanted to travel around the US for more than three months, you could. There's plenty to see.
You can drive LA to New York in about 4 days, non-stop.
If you want to actually see stuff, plan at least a week out and a week back.

If you are in LA, I would suggest one of the classics: Route 66.
There are many websites about what's along the old 66 route.

When you get to Chicago, take US 30 (Lincoln Highway) out east.

I have taken many roadtrips across the US over the years, and have found that sometimes the journey is more important than the destination.

When I did this trip I was coming from NY to California and back.
What I did was to get a map of the US (join the AAA...it'll be worth it, trust me...free maps, free travel planning, emergency road service in case you break down in the desert)and start writing down places I wanted to see...since you're going with friends, you should sit down and do this together. The next thing I'd do is go to the AAA and talk to one of the travel agents about your trip. They can tell you how long the driving distance is between each of the places you chose, which will help you narrow down what you chose to do and see. Then they can put together a triptik, which is a personalized roadmap that not only marks your route, and gives the mileage and approxinate driving time between your stops, but also points out interesting things to see during the trip.
If you don't want to go that route, either rent a car with a GPS, or buy one that's portable, so you'll know where you are en route.
You're going to have a WONDERFUL time! ENJOY!

Stay off the freeways if you want scenery. Start by investigating via the internet "things to see in ...." for each state you'll be going through. Plot on a map the places & things that sound most interesting to you. (National Parks, museums, best restaurants, whatever it is that interests you most.) Then drive according to where most of them are congregated. You'll have a ball! Three months will be more than enough time, as by then you'll be ready to call it quits. It does get fatiguing to travel for extended periods of time. Have fun and be safe!

the trip is the least of it; find placed you may want to stay for weeks, the drive accross is only 3 days. Possibly take some camping exuipmet and state at a few national parks.

I was staying in Florida and we planned for a trip to Smokey Mountains. We drove 3000miles in 3days. Plan for 6 people and take a rental van with DVD player ;-) The trip wont cost much, probably for 4 days it will be 200bucks per head.

Plan to tase good drivers, at least 4out of 6 and take good cameras. Send me ur trip photos :-)
