i have an old imac computer. version 8.6. is their any way to upgrade it or do i just have to buy a new apple??

just buy a new one, apple made it cheaper to buy a new one than update, because you can't. nice people at apple you know.

If you have 8.6 on your iMac, the highest OS I would suggest installing is 9.2. But I would suggest at least 256MB ram.
Installing OS X will slow your computer down considerably and is not a good idea.

If you're talking about upgrading the processor, there are 3rd party processors available but that's not something Apple supports.

You can get a brand new iMac 17" with Intel Core duo 1.83Ghz for 1,299$.
