There are two meanings to the number on clubs. Length and loft. The lower the number, the longer the club. Generally, each club hits the ball about ten yards shorter than the previous club (3-9). There is also the loft factor. The higher the number, the higher the club will usually hit the ball, resulting in a shorter flight path and less roll. There are also wedges and woods. Wedges will get the ball up and down (in the air and down) in a shorter distance and should be used around the greens and out of greenside bunkers. That said, you could use a long iron from a fairway bunker.

Take your sticks to a well marked range and hit a bucket with each iron. You'll learn the average length for each of your clubs. Then when you get onto a course, divide the distance from tee to green and use the correct clubs to get there. For example, if you hit your five iron 175 yards and your driver 220 yards, and the hole is listed as 400 yards, you should be able to get on the green in two and put for a birdie.

Remember, if you are lucky enough to find yourself on a golf course, you're on a golf course.

Enjoy.

The different numbers on the irons a very important thing to know. It shows which iron has the lowest angel. The one with a #3 on it is a 3 iron has a loft of 21 degrees. Then the one with a #4 on it is a 4 iron which has a loft of 24 degrees. So the lower the number the the less degrees it has. You can of course hit the lower irons farther than the higher ones. Then when you get down to a #9 it is a 9 iron it has a degree of 44 degrees so you will hit the ball higher in the air so you can stop it on the green, and hopefully be close to the pin.

Different numbers on different golf clubs means different things.

The most obvious is the club number, like your 1 iron to 10 iron. So you will see 1 to 10 on your club head. It tells you your club for easily identification from the bag. The different irons differ in their loft and distance when you use it to hit it.

The other numbers all over the club might be loft, serial number, model number, shaft model, shaft weight, ... ... and price. =)

the numbers tell the size of the club. There are also loft numbers such as 18 degrees, which tell the angle of the club. On your drivers you'll find the weaght measured in cc's.
