And by heat I mean it's still 95 to 108 at midnight. I have to big cats and I want to be able to keep them cool. It has been 100 to 115 for 5 days now. I cannot keep the air conditioner on all day long because it blows the circuit breaker about every 3 hours. I am gone most of the day and during the hottest part of the day. I have tried to keep damp towels on the kitchen floor and plenty of water available. I keep fans on where they can lay in front of them to try and keep cool. They just seem so listless. I am out of ideas. Any advice?

close all your windows, shades, curtains, and turn on the ac for a couple of hours. then turn it off and leave it like that. it should stay cool until you get back. plus have your fans on allll day. it really makes a difference.

oh and sometimes i put ice in the cats water every now and then. and cats know what to do in hot weather. they go find the darkest place and sit and sleep there as long as possible. other than that...they'll sit on tile, wood floors and away from the carpet to cool off. don't turn on any heated lights, or the oven too much.

My cat shelters from the heat by lying in the bathtub or sink. He also prefers it a little bit wet, so I cool it down further with cold water. I let if flow for about half an hour before I leave home, and often, coming back, I find he's been sleeping in the sink all day, and it still feels relatively cool. You can maybe try that, if your bathroom is not exposed to direct sunlight.

He is annoyed by fans, so we can't use them, but we've created a shelter with a sheet over a chair placed out of direct sunlight, and in the path of some circulting air. He likes that, and the fluttering of the sheet helps him cool down further.

I find that in very hot and humid times my cat is also listless, and does not like to be petted or held. Don't worry about that, their spark will return once its cooler. The vet told us so.

Other than that, we leave extra water around the house, and make sure that his moist food is the gravy type.

They may seem listless in the heat...that is their way of copeing with the heat. I think you are doing all the right things. Fans and water is good. Draw the shades during the day to keep the suns heat out.

Simply choose the coolest and shadiest room for your kitties. The best thing to do is to put soaked/wet towels in the freezer and wait until the water freezes--then wrap 1 or two towels arent the frozen ones, and leave them in the shade or in cardboard boxes for your kitties. Be sure to leave plenty of water for them (add ice--optional), leave some food, and leave plenty of cool places for them to rest on.

I live in arizona, and as i look around the desert, I don't see any kitties. Charles Darwin once said, natural selection keeps all 'kitties out of inferno heat', by sending them to hell. Sometimes, nature brings things to their rightfull place, without us carrying them there. Best of luck finding a practical answer to this question.

When you are home spray them with cold water by using a spray bottle every now and then, you could also do this before you go leave.

It's always best to shave them because as they get older they'll get used to it. I shave my cat to keep him cooler.
