Maybe not public but the execution should be in effect far more often then it is. The average prisoner costs roughly 40 grand a year and for those who are on death row its up to just over 100 grand a year. Remember they are there for bad reasons and the world is finite thus to get rid of some who cannot be let out saves resources for those who needs those resources.

There should be consequences for behavior. When a person is purposely, maliciously murdered or raped, a severe consequence must be provided for society to have clear boundaries. I don't believe that the death of the criminal is to help the victims, I believe it is simply a consequence of the behavior. I do not believe that having a public execution would benefit the society because there would be people would turn a public execution into a money making event.

Get rid of the scum. I don't want to pay for them to have three nutritional meals a day, a roof over their heads, cable TV, or anything else.
