Hiccups are caused by:
1. eating too fast resulting in swallowing a lot of air
2. anything that irritates the diaphragm (too much alcohol, too much fatty food)

There are several methods you can try to get rid of them:
1. hold your breath
2. drink a glass of water quickly
3. pull hard on your tongue
4. a spoon full of sugar placed on the back of your tongue and taken all at once (can be repeated)
5. having someone scare you
6. sniff smelling salts

Try very hard to hiccup. You won't be able to. Works like a charm.

Get a luke warm glass of water. Hold your breath. Take as many small sips of the water as you can until you have to take a breath. That has always worked for me!!!

I've heard and seen this one:

If you're the hiccupee, then get a glass of water...have someone else hold the cup while you drink it, also hold your arms up while doing so.

Keep swallowing small amounts of sugar until it stops. The scratchy feeling at the back of our throats somehow causes it to stop. Scientists do not yet know why.
