he probably has ear mites. Check for large amounts of dark brown waxy stuff.

They live deep in the ear and the best way to get rid of them is to take your dog to the vet.

(s)He will give you ear drops to rub into your dog's ears daily and this usually seems to help.

Look inside the ear and see if you see little black dots that looks like dirt. Take a paper towel and get it wet and try to clean inside the ear. If you see anything that looks like the dots on the paper towel, you need to get some medicine for ear mites.
Once you get the drops put a couple of squirts in the ear and rub underneath the ear really good to get the medication as far into the ear canal as possible - then wipe the ear with a damp paper towel. Usually the treatment is required 2 times a day for a week.
If it does not look like ear mites then you may need to take another look at the ear - flys can bite the ends of a dogs ears and cause pain and damage.
You may need to make a trip to the vet.

Your dog could have an infection in his ear. Is his ear warm to the touch? And is his ear red and swollen looking on the inside? My dog gets ear mites sometimes and they make the dogs ear/s look really dirty, red and swollen and are very itchy and sensitive. I started cleaning my dogs infected ear with "R-7 Ear Cleaner for dogs and cats" very gently with q-tips, now, it should only be the outer part of the ear NOT THE INNER and then I used "R-7M Ear Mite Treatment for dogs and cats". I got them at Petsmart, and I noticed a major difference within a couple of days.

Ear mites. Clean his ears with vegetable oil and use a Q-Tip to clean the ear out. A lot of brown stuff will come out on the cotton. This is a combination of dried blood and dead mites. When the cotton comes out clean the job is pretty much done. But leave a light coating of oil in his ear.

You should clean your dogs ears at least once a month with Sulfodene or something similar.

Just squirt it in there and rub it in.
