Why are people willing to spend extra money to be able to make PDF files? What makes them so special? Somebody just gave me the software to create PDF files. What can I do with it? Why are they better than other kinds of files?

not really, but they are becoming the industry "standard." used to be notepad or MS word was the preferred way to send out documents but nowadays it's PDF's. with PDF's you cannot alterate the contect as you could with a notepad or MS word doc. I guess to combat plagiarism. they're bigger than normal txt files so I really don't get it but whatever, something will come along in a couple of years that'll make these pdf's obsolete

It's pretty much a universal documentation format that supports different fonts, graphics, charts, pictures, or pretty much anything you want to document. Plus the software to view it is free where as many people will pay for Microsoft Word or Lotus Notes that show the same thing.

they're more universal a file type than others... if you send someone a document as a pdf, you can keep them from making changes to it, which can be important sometimes.
