Its easy, I take my dog out with a collar but no lead, my dog is very good but when I see another dog I put him straight on the lead, not for other dogs but my dog aswell, some dogs that are not socialised don't know how to react when they see another dogs so the other dog picks up on this and simply attacks because its a case of get before get got, I'm very sorry your dog was attacked and you. The owner should have had more sense, and you have a good case to complain to the rspca if you know who the owner is, all I, or anyone else can say is look after number one yes its not your fault or problem but if you see another dog without a lead, walk your dog in the other direction and wait til they've past this is unfair but think of your dog, you're lucky in a way because years ago I had to watch my dog get killed right in front of me I tryed to get in the way but had no chance, the other dog was to big and strong against me and my terrier, don't let these ignorant owners let the same happen to you.

I have a chocolate lab that i walk with a lead and a collar. She loves to play fetch and is so infactuated with the game that I can take off her leash and she will only fetch the ball, ignoring all other dogs, people etc... I know that I could pay a very high price for this should it lead to violence, however we are talking about a good dog not a piece of s**t white trash pit bull. I feel that all pits violent or not should be put down in a mass extinction. they serve no purpose other than fighting. So when I exercise my lab it is a chance I am willing to take. The man you encountered shouldn't be able to own a dog at all, stupid a-hole. by the way I feel the same about chows, akitas, german shepards, or any other violent dog and their ignorant owners. You cannot take the violence out of the dog it is in their genes, much like it is in a labs genes to retrieve.

My dog doesnt wear a collar in the house. They shouldnt wear a collar 24/7 it irritates their skin. Plus, he trained to know "no-collar" time means in th house mode, hes less hyper. If I go to the mailbox or take the trash out, or mess around inthe yard for a bit he goes out without a collar, if he decides to come out at all. BUT! I dont walk him without a leash or collar. Yes, my dog is trained, he doesnt go in the street, comes when called, doesnt run after starngers or odd dogs. So I guess im one of the ignorant owners. Sorry.
You have the right to sue that owner you know. If other neighbors can side that the dog is routinely not on a leash then you hav the right to damages. All be it the dog may be put down should you do.

i can tell you now, that the dog owner should be reported for a dog that is out of control. If you are in uk this is a basic law. So is a dog wearing a collar and id tag. They are just simply irresponsible. Are you sure the collar didn't snap as the dog went after you?
anyway, two laws broken. Time to get the police in me thinks.
I would also like to add that akita's shepherds, etc are NOT violent dogs. They are very placid unless bred badly or in the wrong hands. People should not be as ignorant about these sorts of things....Dr ruth.... tut tut. be ashamed of yourself. Very ashamed for being SOOOOOO small minded!

Well, the woner must take the blame.. but there are rationale why do owner put there dog walk with them without it. Dog owner might wan to train the dog to walk beside them all the time and also let the dog learn the way to go back incase they are lost.. I train my dogs to do that too which usually at the middle of the night so that there are not much ppl. If you leash up yr dog all the time, your dog will be lacking of confident and always try to pull away... I do pity your pain but sometime is unforeseen.. just for example : i walked on the beach and get myself hurt with sharp sticks poking into my toe.. i went thru operation... but i cannot blame the beach nor anybody... now for you, at least there is dog's owner who takes the blame. Take care !

In the uk it is not enough for the dog to have a collar on; he must have a collar and name tag, whatever his breed. And it is not enough for him to be on the lead; he must also be under control. Dumb owners think a lead is enough, then let the dog jump around all over the place.
A tip for the future; a can of Coke shaken hard then opened so it spurts up a dogs nose will cause it to release its grip if it has hold of you or your dog.
You have a split second to get control of it while it sneezes and backs off.

My parents have a big yard and our pit bull is never on a leash while he'splaying outside. My family and I, unlike a lot of low lifes out there, are responsible dog owners. Our dog NEVER ONCE ever so much as attempted to leave the yard. Plenty of dogs have walked by the house. He'll just look, and then continue on. Many people are NOT RESPONSIBLE. These people should not be allowed to own an animal. It's people like that who are the reason why many people are being forced to have their pit bulls put to sleep.
People need to start being responsible for their actions. I am sorry to hear that you were bit, and I hope your dog is okay too. I just want to say that not ALL pit bulls are like that. There are people who own them and train them to fight or get them as status symbols because they know many people are afraid of them. It sickens me. Because of them, I risk losing my favorite furry friend.

any dog that is dangerous or does not like other dogs should be on a lead.
I do walk my dogs off the lead - but they will lie down on command, they are friendly and completely non agressive and will not run up to other dogs.
I do feel for you as I had a staff for 8 years (beautiful dog) and he was always walked on a lead if there were other dogs around. Its just being responsible.

i was told a couple of years ago by the police that it is an offence to have a dog in a public place without a lead on. This was after my dog was attacked by another dog. Both of dogs were off the lead so we were either going to be both charged or left as it was!!!
