People will joke with you about it at first but how you deal with the taunts and such will determine how they view you. Now if you don't hang out after duty hours with your peers then you might be alienated a tad. Maybe take the opportunity to be the designated driver.

You will be a bit of an outsider but nobody is going to hate you for not going and drinking. You will have friends. People in the military are usually accepting of others. I am sure there is just as much drinking in college as there is in the military. At least in the military, you will have the self confidence to say no. Don't stress it too bad.

Just let them know that you do not enjoy that type of recreation...
While I was in the Navy.. it was ok for people not to drink... there were some functions that ALL were encouraged to attend.. but they were also offered soft drinks instead of alcohol.. those are the ones that you should attend... your political career and your promotions may depend upon it... but you still do not need to drink or do anything else that you do not wish to do.
Take advantage of the educational opportunities wherever you are stationed ... I took college courses at nearly every duty station where I had time...
I finally got my Bachelor's degree.. and with only 189 semester credits!! *GriN*

Don't be surprised when you get in to find that your not the only one that dose'nt drink in the military. There are alot of other members that never touch the stuff, for a wide range of reasons. Anyway, it's your choice, and nobodys business if you decide to drink or not. Others will not think your strange, the only thing that they would like to know is if your going to be there for them when the going gets tuff and that you do your duty. If you are that kind of person, I promise, no one will give it a second thought. Good luck

I don't drink either and a lot of people will find that odd,-b/c who the hell doesn't? I don't care what they think and all that I know don't care that I'm not a drinker, they like me for who I am, and a lot that I know respect that-they see that I don't get peered pressured and I stand by my values. Also, have a friend(s) at the Air Force Academy and I know they don't drink-or at least get trashed. I just have apathy for alcohol-yes, I've tried it, and Bacardi and Mike's hard lemonade are one of the few that I will drink-but even then.

Was in naval reserve and drank alot while enlisted didn't think anyone thought someone who didn't drink was weird. If anything it was good to have a clear head around and a designated driver at all times lol

There is plenty of people in the military that dont drink. and the ones that do, dont do it as often, in general people wake up early etc, so the party is usually on the weekends. use your time to study and get promoted.

Unfortunately yes. It takes a lot of backbone not to join the drinking crowd
