I inherited an overweight (32 pounds) cat who was on Iams diet food. However cats are forced carnivores, so they DON'T want a low-fat, high-carb diet, like most diet catfood- it can lead to diabetes. They need an Atkins-like diet. Normal (not diet) "Chicken Soup for the Cat's Soul" is 30 % Protein, 20% fat. And their food is human grade food, not scraps. A year on that and my cat is now 16 pounds & very healthy. Don't think a cat can diet like a human, they can't. Diet catfood is designed so people will think it will help your cat lose weight by being low-fat. You want no corn in the cat food, and meat as at least the first 3 ingredients. How many feral cats do you see that are overweight? None. And they eat mostly meat. You can also make your own catfood with a recipe at this source:

Although everyone thinks they have answered this question simply, it is not that easy, I have the same problem. One of my cats is so skinny that her ribs almost show, the other is so fat she looks like a beach ball! We give them dry food such as science diet, which you leave out for them to eat at random intervals throughout the day so CANNOT seperate their feeding times. Have you taken the big one to the vet? Because our vet doesnt' seem to worry too much, even though she really is huge!! The only thing I can suggest is get the special diet food and give it to all the cats, but when you're in the house seperate the little ones and give them some extra tuna or something. Hope that helps

Get his blood checked at the vet, he could have diabetes or something-even a tumor. If you cat weighs that much, it's incredibly overweight.
Feed him a good food for adult/indoor cats by Science Diet.
Our kitten was getting too fat, so we put him on the Indoor formula by Science Diet and it's worked nicely for him.
We play with him at least 3x a day with DaBird. That's a kitty toy with a wand, string and feathers attached. He loves to jump and get exercise that way. Put away the toy in a closet when you are finished so he doesn't get tangled up in it or choke. ***very impt***
If you do all of the above, you will see results :)

Buy high-protein low fat cat food. Feed him less and only twice a day. Don't leave food out all day. 30 pounds is seriously overweight - I'm worried about my cats that weigh less than 1/2 that. He will get diabetes and have a much shorter life if you don't do something drastic.

The first thing you should do is take him in to the vet. I suggest testing for thyroid and diabetes. If those come back normal, you need to feed the cat better food and less of it. The correct feeding recommendations your vet can go over with you or read the instructions on the food container. A cat that is 30 pounds is over 15+ pounds over weight, that is obese and dangerous.

I have given up on this one. My cat is 35lbs....not all fat. He is a Russian Blue so he is larger than most cats. I have been feeding him Weight Control food and it is not working. He does not get table scraps or moist food so I know there is no other source making him fat.
If your vet does not think he has a thyroid problem and you control his diet there may not be anything else that you can do.

They have diet food for cats. Exercise with him! We had a cat get pretty hefty, so I just spent more time with him. I played fetch with him and chased him around the house.

Buy weight control cat food. All the major cat food brands have one, purina, iams, and science diet for sure.
