Obviously you are thinking :) No, just plain walking doesn't allow the heart rate nor the adrenaline to increase sufficiently enough to actually do a great deal of good for weight loss although it does seem to assist people with heart/diabetes conditions.
The best type of exercise actually seems to be (in my opinion) cycling exercises...not the bike type but the type where you do one exercise quickly and once you tire move to the next exercise and when tiring there, to the next. You can have 3 core exercises for each session. I was doing this on a 7 minute basis, 3 exercises each day targeting areas I wanted to firm up and lose from. After doing 7 minutes of 3 exercises as quickly as possible you definitely need a shower if done correctly. Then wait 40 minutes to eat, don't exercise on a full stomach.
If you do this type of exercise you'll lose and firm up much more than simple walking will do. It's still fine to do the walking but if you add the cardio exercises...you are encouraging your body to actually burn fat properly. You can burn fat after a good exercise routine that increases your heartrate, for up to 2 hours after exercising. The best time to exercise for some is in the a.m. before breakfast and drink 10 - 8 oz servings of water through the day. Others exercise in the pm around 4-5 and it's believed that the lungs are at their highest capacity then which supposedly helps increase the stamina in exercise routines.
I say do what feels correct and proper to you...if you are eating portions that are reasonable size, they consist of healthy ingredients and you are not binging or eating all kinds of snacks etc., then the exercise program that you go on should be geared to the areas you want to tone up as you lose weight.
Oddly enough, you might go to bed one night feeling as tho you've lost absolutely nothing only to wake the next day and suddenly be able to fit into that outfit you couldn't two weeks ago...it took time to put the weight on it takes time to take it off...only difference is its harder to work to get it off than it was to sit, eat and put it on :)
You might want to look into the GI Diet which lets you eat a large selection of foods and you can still lose weight sensibly.
Good luck with your quest,

Yes it can help in reducing your thigs and mid area and strenthening them
Only if you are not used to too much excercising. If your body is already used to heavy excercise walking may not help very much in reducing weight.
Walking is a light aerobic exercise where you burn bout 220-290 cal per hour depending on your speed and weight.
You can add more excercises to this to burn more calories. But if you want to go with more higher impact aerobics jogging would be better. Again you need to start walking for a couple of days beofre starting jogging. Also consult your doc beofre any heavy impact aerobics.
Walking although is good on a long run...you can do it for all your life unline other high impact excercises which you may have to stop!

Walking is GREAT. Just about everybody can walk and you are a lot less likely to get hurt walking. You can take your dogs with you and they like it too :) When you are all in good enough shape you can pick up the pace a bit, but don't underestimate the benefits of walking.

For general health, walking is the best exercise possible. Now, if you want to specialize in some area of health, then you need to select or develop a more specialized regimen. But for general physical and mental health, walking is the best. I've been an aerobic athlete for decades and a mental health practitioner for about the same amount of time, and I've applied my aerobic knowledge in my counseling practice with great success. God Bless you.

Fast walking, not strolling. Just walking has to be good some some people who normally do not get any exercise. The goal of a good exercise is to increase your heart rate and fast walking would do that.

I walk 3 miles a day. I lost weight and my mental health improved greatly. The things that generally made me crazy did not seem so bad. I look forward to the walk and never miss.I suggest you buy new "running" shoes before you start. I suggest "running" shoes for walking because they offer more support and padding. I only wear "running " shoes when I walk.

Bicycle riding and Swimming are the best all around exercises.
In fact when my legs hurt from bicycle riding I take a swim and it evens out the muscles.
Walking is good to start with but for any benefit you must get your heart rate up.
walking is a good cool down exercise after a workout.

Walking fast is good and carrying weights while walking is better, and I would suggest it over most exercises because it is easier to commit to, and the older you get it might be the only exercise you can do.

Well, walking is better than sitting -- it's at least a start. But the quality of exercise varies per person. For me, it's pretty poor because it does not elevate my heart rate too much. You want to get your heart rate up to improve your fitness.
