Most pre-K programs are limited as to how many students that they can take, so they are usually tested to see their ability and the program usually takes only those who will benefit the most from the program.

For public school they just need shots and be healthy. They take it from there. They do a screening to see where they are at and if they are too low or high in certain areas, they do a plan. If you are asking where they should be to be a normal kindergartenter, that's different.

They usually, by six, can sit and listen for a few minutes, color, write figures in shaky lines, identify some shapes and colors and other common things like cats, chairs, grandpa. That kind of thing. They don't usually read or write, but they know that reading goes from left to right and top to bottom, and they usually know letters from numbers and may even be able to name some letters. Don't worry, just go with what your child knows, read to them when you can, do some puzzles on occasion and get out the crayons. Don't put pressure on yourself to have the perfect kid. Most Kindergarten teachers I have spoken with say things like listening and sitting still are more important than any of the academic stuff. Good Luck!

Your 2 year old should be able to speak simple sentences and should be off diapers during the day. When I was 2, I was only in diapers at night, and I gave it up on my third birthday, cold turkey (along with a bottle/feeding cup)
