It comes from our brain. When two people are attracted to each other, a virtual explosion of adrenaline-like nuerochemicals gush forth. Fireworks explode and we see stars. Phenylethylamine is a chemical that speeds up the flow of information between nerve cells.
Also, involved in chemistry are dopamine and norepinephrine, chemical cousins of amphetamines. Dopamine makes us feel good and norepinephrine stimulates the production of adrenaline. It makes our heart race! These three chemicals combine to give us infatuation or "chemistry." It is why new lovers feel euphoric and energized, and float on air. It is also why new lovers can make love for hours and talk all night for weeks on end. This is the chemistry or the love sparks we all seek.
Actually, chocolate is full of phenylethylamine, that chemical cousin of amphetamine. So, when we say we are in love with chocolate, there is a certain chemistry there!

I am not a scientist or anything but I remember learning in biology class that the chemical dopamine cause our hormones to increase cause an energetic feeling in our system which is similar to the adrenaline from going on a rollercoaster.
If we stop loving our life is with little meaning. I think what you are referring to is how can we love certain people even when they hurt us. I think it's that desire to love is so strong we fail to realize the negative parts but this can be a bad thing. Sometimes we have to work with our head and our heart so someone we love or care about doesn't treat us less than how we should be feeling.

I disagree with many of these answers: It's not your brain, your hormones or sex organs, I believe it's the soul. I cannot prove this of course, since science cannot classify the soul.
But there is a difference between lust and love. Lust is what you feel when you see someone of the opposite (or in some cases, the same) sex and think they're attractive, but you don't know anything about them. Love is when you care for someone, not even neccesarily a lover. It can be for a brother or sister, a friend, a parent, someone close that you're not in a romantic relationship with. A solder that runs out to drag his friend out of enemy fire even though he knows both of them will probably die does it out of love, for instance.
There are many types of love, not just romatic.

Researchers at an Italian university say the powerful emotions that bowl over new lovers are triggered by a molecule known as nerve growth factor.

"Nerve growth factor is a chemical that is involved in the growth and maintenance of our nervous system," explained USF neuroscience researcher Dr. Paul Sandberg.

Italian scientists found far higher levels of NGF in the blood of 58 people who had recently fallen passionately in love than in the blood of a group of singles and people in long-term relationships.

"When we fall in love, there is all sorts of new connections, new perceptions, new experiences being formed. So nerve growth factor will be required for this. As well, nerve growth factor can affect the adrenal gland and other areas of the body to help enhance arousal," he continued.

Yes there is chemicals in our bodies that make us feel in certain ways when we are in love. But there is no chemicals that causes love. Love it self is a feeling that happens when we want to be with someone forever. True love is that we will do anything just to spend one second with the person we love. If you find out what makes us love another person please let me know so I can find a cure.

There are all kinds of chemicals and organs associated with creating
those chemicals - associated with sex and reproduction.

However, to date nobody has really isolated any single organ in
connection with love other than intelligence and memory - which is
located in the brain.

Where in the brain?

There's a PHD thesis if every I heard one!

Ooooo, that's a good question! I think the 'source' of what makes us love - or not love - is our soul. I believe some people have souls that are filled with darkness, or hatred, where love could never eminate from, and some people have souls that allow love to manifest itself.
