1. A prophet would always have a " Doth sayeth the Lord" and never fail. According to the Old Testament, a prophet that failed a prophecy would have to die by stoning.
2. Always do everything according to the Scriptures.
3. Have an unblemished testimony.
4. Be humble and always give the glory to God and not unto himself.

Do you mean God talked to you? How could that be so possible? Well, there really is a person called "prophet "by God. The only difference it has from the others is that, the others are false prophets.

By definition a 'prophet' is one who speaks for God. The Age of the Prophets closed with the death of St. John the Apostle.
One who professes to 'see the future' is not a prophet. He is a 'seer.'
Additionally, prophecies frequently were conditional: Ex. 'Unless the people change their ways and return to God, God will destroy the city...'
Beware of false prophets. Beware also of clergymen was are also businessmen (St. Jerome, 400 A.D.)

A prophet gives a message to the people that was given to them by God. (not an angel)...if a prophet is wrong on what he prophesizes then he is killed. There are false prophets today. I believe John, the last living apostle was the last prophet.

A prophet of God traditionally was someone who relayed the words of God to other people, usually in a future tense. If that prophecy didn't come true then they were labelled "false prophets" and executed.

In Hebrew it's "nabi" from the root meaning "to bubble forth like a fountain" or "to utter". A prophet is generally someone who is either divinely inspired to speak, or can predict the future.
How can you tell if the person isn't a prophet? Simple. They are wrong, just once.

Think of it this way. God, if there really is one, is an engineer. A prophet is a marketing executive.
