May be due to the age of the player, CD players are the same way when dealing with recorded media. Older players may be a little more touchy, especially if they were made when recordable media wasn't common.... but no idea how old your player is.

Likewise, if you recorded on your computer, it will be more likely to play it well compared to other players. Perhaps try playing it on someone else's player to determine if it is more likely the DVD or the player.

Especially when I get DVD's as rentals or from the library... those that have taken a ton of abuse, I take a soft cotton cloth and kind of buff out any of the scraps and scratches if I can, but remember to go from the center out as much as possible... a DVD or CD is spinning at super high speeds, so it is less the little dots here and there are even lines running from center out that cause issues, but those that run along the "path"... think of it like an old record and the needle running along the groove.

This usually happens with an overheat condition.
The laser then stops functioning properly.
Make sure that there is sufficient airflow around the unit. No books laying on top. That type of thing.
You may have to replace the DVD player.
