So, a guy I've been dating called me up after work and asked if I wanted to hang out tonight. It was pretty late (9:30), and I had to work early the next morning. Also, he lives 40 minutes away in the middle of a city that's hard to navigate at night. He told me he was "away" from his car and wanted to know if I could drive there.

I declined and said that we'd see each other later that week.

I didn't tell him this, but I thought to myself after I hung up: If he really wanted to see me tonight, he'd drive to see *me*.

Was I rude? Did I do the right thing?

Not neccessarily. A lot of variables have to be considered in this situation, but from what we have:

1. You've 'been' dating. How long has it been? Do you trust him enough to meet him "40 minutes away, at 10:10pm, in a city that's hard to navigate?

2. You were very professional ad reasonable, declining his request, but leabing the door open for another time (hence not rejecting him totally). If he was "away" from his car and could not come to you, it is perfectly reasonable that you had to work early and could not go to him.

3. Ultimately, we'll find out what happens the next time you see / talk to him. Post updates if you can.

Tough to call. Perhaps he was drinking and took a cab to his place, rather than drink and drive. I don't think you were rude, just not in the mood to see him tonite.
