I have a friend who is a 911 dispatcher. People call 911 for the dumbest things:
- when are the fireworks going to be? (on 4th of July)
- what time is it?
- asking for phone numbers for...restaurants, stores, etc.
People should use 911 for emergencies only. This is probably one of the most common sense related things in the world, yet when they pick up the phone, their brains turn to mush.
What people don't realize is by tying up those 911 lines, they could easily make it impossible for people to call in with REAL emergencies.
Just always remember:
Where the incident is happening
What is happening and what emergency service is needed
Who is involved
Is it in progress?
Don't hang up until the 911 dispatcher tells you to do so

Well I called 911, which was funny, cause the time I had to call 911, I answered 911 calls as my job... I called cause my apartment building was on fire at 3 AM. actually it was very scary, but I was pretty calm, cause I knew what the person on the other end wanted to know. Location of the apartment (even though the calls are traced), flames seen (not just smoke), and where at was the fire. then i knew to get out blah blah blah. It is much scarier answering the 911 calls than making them. I have answered lots of scary 911 calls including (and many more) fights with guns and knives, child not breathing, a man getting his arm cut off with a chain saw, and a tractor rolling over an elderly man...

I had to call 911 in the early morning hours of Jan. 10, 2006. My house was burning to the ground and we had to call for the fire department. It was snowing like crazy and we just stood there and watched it burn completely to nothing. It even burned the floors. All that was left was a hole in the ground with twisted metal that used to be the refrigerator and stove, things like that. We got out with the pjs we were wearing and nothing more. Not even shoes. But, we are in a new home now and things are great.

yes - just wish you never have to call 911 - and rest assured you wont forget why you called if you did have to - because the situation at hand is all you can think of at such a time and you wont believe how well you can explain the scene! you may start thinking of going into journalism after that!

OK, wanna hear the stupidest reason my husband HAD to call 911? Here goes, he went to the cop-shop to report his bike stolen. The desk clerk "at the cop-shop" makes him go to the pay phone in the lobby and call 911 to make the report!!! When the operator asked him where he was, he said, "at the cop-shop" and the operator laughed!!!
Sad, but true!!
Much Love!!

Yeah, a couple of times. Once, I saw a guy get beat up really badly after this car pulled up, and four guys got out in a really bad neighborhood on my way home from work. The operator asked if he was hurt badly. I told her it looked like it but I wasn't getting out of the car to see. I wasn't even stopping! She didn't seem to excited.

Yes I did when my child was choking. They put me on hold!! Luckily I saved him myself. This is just one data point and hopefully not typical.
