If you look at the Gospel of Mark chapter 16:9 for the story of the resurrection they are talking about the day that Jesus comes back after he has died on the cross and is buried in a tomb. The ascension happens later. After Jesus is resurrected He appears to the disciples and others over a short period of time and provides further instructions. At some point Jesus says goodbye (see Mark Chapter 16:19) to the disciples and He ascends into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father.

Typically the resurrection is a term used to describe Jesus rising from the dead, back to life. Ascension is referred to after the resurrection Jesus had appeared to over 500 people for a certain period of time He then went to the mount of Olives and promised everyone that the same way He leaves is the same way He will return and ascended or (was raised up) into the clouds and subsequently into heaven.

The term "resurrection" is used in the literal sense to mean either the religious concept of the reunion of the spirit and the body of a dead person, or the return to life of a dead person.
The Resurrection of Jesus is an event in the New Testament in which "God raised him from the dead" after his death by crucifixion. It is celebrated by Christians on Easter Sunday.
For forty days after the Resurrection, Jesus continued to preach the Gospel. Jesus and the eleven were gathered near Mt. Olivet, to the northeast of Bethany. Jesus tells his disciples that they will receive the power of the Holy Spirit and that they will spread his message the world over. Jesus is taken up and received by a cloud. Two men clothed in white appear and tell the disciples that Jesus will return in the same manner as he was taken. (Acts of the Apostles (1:9-12))
The Christian doctrine of the Ascension holds that Jesus bodily ascended to heaven by His own power in presence of His disciples, following His Resurrection. It is narrated in Mark 16:19, Luke 24:51, and in the first chapter of the Acts of the Apostles. This is affirmed by Christian liturgy in the Apostles' Creed and the Nicene Creed.

Resurrection is when Jesus came back to life.
Ascension - means to go up - so it was when he was floated back to heaven - in the flesh.
