Mitchell holds the record for defenses in the jr Lightweight Division (12). He also captured the IBF title after the WBA stripped him for fighting (and beating) Tony Lopez. In his entire career MItchell only lost once, and he was undoubtedly the greatest fighter South Africa ever produced. Moreover, because of that country's then apartheid policies, Mitchell was forced to take his act on the road, making every one of his defenses in the other guy's back yard against not only his opponent, but hostile crowds and arguably hostile judges.

Bear in mind that a lot of 'great' fighters refused to fight Mitchell because he was South African. He beat everyone they put in front of him. He would've beaten Azumah Nelson. No question.

It is not just your record that makes you great. The other determinant is how many other good/great fighter you defeat in their prime.
