Your best best would be acrylic paints. They can be used exactly as oil paints and they require only water as a mixing medium. They also make canvas boards that are much cheaper than canvases. You can find these at Michael's arts and crafts store if you have any nearby you. You will need probably four brushes...a large one to cover mass areas, and smaller more detailed brushes...depending on what you like to paint. I do portraits myself. The first thing you will want to do when painting is get paint on all of your canvas. For instance, you would paint in the sky as you wish it to appear in the finished state because that is something that is difficult to touch up later. Then lets say you are painting a tree. You would paint in the trunk in the darkest shade of brown that will be on the tree, and the darkest shade of green that will be the leaves. Same with your background/foreground. Once all color is on your canvas you start coming back on each area adding to it. Do not try to 'finish' each spot as you work on it. Add a little light green to the tree leaves...add a little light brown..to the trunk...continue working this through your painting, going back and forth between areas until you are finally at the stage where you are only need 'final touches', such as flowers perhaps.

Paint by number may sound childish but it really gives you the pricision you need to be able to do the fine lines and the finished picture looks good and makes you feel like you have accomplished a real painting, also try the acrylics they are easy to mix and they are easy to clean up and try getting some scetch artist paper and practice on that before you get a canvas, but the small canvases are inexpensive, $2-$10 at a art supply store or even Big Lots if you have one in your town, I saw some the other day! also try water colors because that is another medium that is easy to paint with and it is beautiful to work with, and try different sizes of brushes and they too are inexpensive if you look around at the arts and crafts stores and buy a small brush w/ little bristles and a medium one and a large one....these are basic.
