Every time I draw on myself someone starts telling me that I'll get ink poisoning and they'll have to cut my arm off. I would like to know if this is true.
If it is, what are the phases of the poisoning process?
If it is a lie why do they tell me that?
Why do my parents freak out when I draw on myself, espically if it is MY body?

You should check out how ink is made... and what it is made from...

many inks are metal based.. meaning they use various metal elements to create them... and some of these metals are toxic to humans... even in tiny amounts.. like mercury.

how do you get the ink off? do you lick it and then wipe it off? making your tongue all black.. and swallowing a portion of the ink?

Each element has different signs for poisoning... some will cause blackening around the eyes.. and then the eyes seem to hollow out.. and sink back into your head... like the Mad Hatters desease of photographers who used mercury to process their plates...

some poisoning does not always show up physically... like aluminum.. which affects the memory.. I think... or was it lead? (Just kidding.. it is aluminum).

lead can cause major brain problems...

my daughter colors her boyfriend's arms all the time... try to use non-toxic colors... and let you parents know they ARE non-toxic... it won't make them feel better about your artwork.. but at least they will know that they need to come up with a different method of getting you to quit drawing on yourself....

oh.. by the way... it is much more productive to carry a sketch pad and draw in it... so you will have a record from year to year of your handiwork... ever want to be a professional artist?.. I have a friend whose son got a FULL scholarship based upon his sketch book drawings.

There is no way in heck you're going to even get sick from just some drawing on your arm.

You would have to drink a couple of penfuls of ink or inject a penful into your veins to actually suffer any ill effects.

Modern inks are not considered harmful. If they were, we wouldn't be using them.

Your parents just freak out because it looks silly and it might not wash out too easily.

I have several people that I know (in their forties) who have written on themselves since they were teens and have not gotten ink poisoning. You probably could get it from tatoos, but not from drawing on yourself with a pen, since the ink doesn't penetrate the surface of your skin.

Also: Your parents are probably freaking out because they think you want a tatoo and they don't want you to get one or want one. So maybe your best course of action would be to explain why you do it.
