Salem Mass is a beautiful spot. Its loaded with Bed and Breakfasts. Being in November the rates should drop dramatically after Halloween. If you want to go a little closer , there are a lot of waterfront Bed +Breakfasts at the Jersey shore in Spring Lake.(all Victoria Houses)

How about surrounding yourself in a different culture? Cities have areas like 'china town' or 'little italy' for example where you can enjoy the communities.

If your flying, I lived in the St Pete Tampa area which it tourist friendly due to the strong competition plus with all the senior citizans, they're always plenty of reduced priced activities and early bird restaurant specials. I didnt appreciate it until moving to Dallas.

Well, cheap will be hard to pull off. However, if I were in NYC and wanting to "get away", I'd head to the Montauk Point or Martha's Vineyard (yes, both are long drives). The weather shouldn't be too challenging in November.

There's also Oheka Castle in Huntington (Long Island). It's not cheap but it would definitely guarantee you'll see a 2nd anniversary. :)
