I have just answered a similar question and think you will find enough information to do further research should that interest you: just check out one of the most recent questions I've answered...this is kinda how it went:

The group with whom Israel has beef is called "Hezbollah" this group is not actually associated with the Lebanese government, however, many members happen to be Lebanese. The Lebanese government has been acting indifferently towards the acts of Hezbollah (fire rockets haphazardly at Israel) which has caused Israel to become upset. The Israelis' retaliation has taken the form of attacking all of Lebanon.

So: we have a faction of terrorists (some from Lebanon/or at least currently residing there) firing at Israel. Since Hezbollah doesn't have their own country, the closest thing Israel has to retaliation is to fire upon the people in Lebanon - despite the fact that these people most likely have nothing to do with the situation whatsoever. The Israeli government feels justified as they hope their attacks will encourage the Lebanese government to take control within their borders to monitor and squash the powers of Hezbollah and similar groups.

Palestinians are from Palestine. Although Palestine isnot actually a country (in official terms, most people, myself included, believe that Palestine should be recognized and taken as seriously as Israel - just b/c the Arab communities didn't have the Brits to draw up a country for them doesn't make them any less valid).

Israel has had problems with a terrorist group called Hamas and Hezbollah. the Israelis gave back the land that the two H's wanted. then the Hamas members kept firing missiles into Israeli territories. then they kidnapped a Israeli soldier. then the Israelis got pissed off and moved into Gaza. then the Hezbollah faction got mad at the Israelis for moving against Gaza that they kidnapped two soldiers from the Lebanon Israeli border. this really got the Israelis mad that They invade Lebanon because the Lebanese government supports the terror group Hezbollah.
these terror groups have been asking for a fight and they got it. now they want the international community to stop the Israeli's but their cries are falling on deaf ears.

that's a proxy conflict between the Saudi Arabians ( arming the rebels) and Iran (arming the Syrians), with the Russians, China and united states attempting to achieve reward through fuelling the fireplace. Turkey needs its historic Empire back, so it is going to operate particularly of Syria to the little bit of Cyprus it already controls, and the ecu sits impotent on the part lines. The losers: the Syrian persons, right away to be followed by the common and sturdy Jordanians.

Power and ignorance. They say it is a holy war, but war is not holy. It islike little boys on a playground who want to be in charge, but these boys have guns and bombs. The only thing that war does is to hurt the innocent people on both sides who probably wasn't asked, "Hey, do you think we should fight and maybe have your homes or lives lost as a casualty of war. Power and ignorance is a deadly combination in anything.

It started with Hezbollah sneaking into Israel and kidnapping 2 israelie soldiers. So israel made them pay. It's all Hezbollahs fault and Lebanons for letting them do this.

They have something the other wants.
That is the basis for every war, including those among family.
We are selfish and can not see past our own wants.
Not our needs, our wants.
We are nasty as a human race

those 2 kidnappings were just a scapegoat - in their heart of hearts they want the others dead, and they'll go to war over anything - look at Wikipedia, every single paragraph is about death
